How Does Music Affect Plant Growth
Several studies show that music possesses properties that affect the growth rate of plants in different ways. These properties may be the wavelength of the music, its frequency or even its tempo. According to a study conducted by Margaret E. Collins and John E. K. Foreman, entitled The Effect of Sound on the growth rate of plants (2001), plants growth is directly affected by sounds of varying frequencies. They observed that when plants are exposed to pure tones, it affects the growth of the plant. This was due to the transverse wave which results to the increase of transpiration on the plant. Random noise was also highlighted as factor where the growth of the plant became less.
Their experiment involved the use of a chamber that controlled

A study by Gagliano et al. (2012) explained that plants vibrate at the rhythm of an evolutionary common sense. Plants use sound waves or vibrations for communication. Communication and sensory research about plants has an existing evidence but still not recognized and need for further investigations. As a preliminary investigation, both emission and detection of sound may be adaptive. It is still hard to believe that acoustic emission can be a factor in the growth or production of a plant but on the other hand we cannot set aside some studies and theories saying that there is really phenomenological importance of sound and vibrations in plant physiology. Moreover, sound can indeed affect the growth of a plant especially in modulating swarm behavior of growing roots. The researchers suggested that using music is a lot cheaper than the production of volatile allelochemical messengers commonly used by plants. Thus, the lack of studies in this field of area leaves a gap on the possibility of exploring other significant effects of sound on plants. (Gagliano, Mancuso, & Robert, …show more content…
They used thirty (30) Roses and divided it into five groups depending on the genre of the music namely: Indian Classical music, Vedic chants, Western Classical music, Rock music, and the other group was seperated to kept silent in a closed room. The study concluded that playing Vedic Chants and Indian Classical Music in plants affects the growth of the plant whereas the rock music deteriorate the growth of the rose. The researchers also suggested that based on the findings, Vedic Chants and Indian Classical Music can be played in plants to improve growth of the plant resulting better crop

Over the course of one week, the stem lengths of the plants grown with dim lighting were considerably longer than those grown in full light (Figure 1). The means of the two groups were compared using an unpaired t-test (Mean full light= 2.86cm, Mean dim light= 4.68cm, p<0.0001). The cotyledon mass of the fast plant grown in full florescent light more than doubled the mass of the plant grown in dim lighting.…

The second aim of the investigation was to find out whether the initial height of the plant influences its stomatal density. Cuttings were taken from lavender plants to ensure that all the plants were genetically identical and that the only changes occurring in the stomatal density would be due to environmental conditions. Four cuttings were short (3 cm initial height) and four were tall (6 cm initial height). The cuttings were put under compact fluorescent light bulbs with four different power ratings (8, 11, 14, and 20 W). One short and one tall cutting were put under each of the four light bulbs for 28 days in order to grow them. Both the short and the tall plants showed a positive correlation between their stomatal densities and the light intensity. The correlation was statistically significant at a 0.025 significance level according to the Pearson product-moment correlation test. The short and the tall plants grown under the same light intensity did not show any statistically significant difference between their stomatal…

As shown in figure one you can see more plant growth associated with the control group. The average height in inches fluctuates with the treatment group. The control group has one peak at week three in average height, along with a peak at week 3 in the treatment group. The increased average growth seen in week 3 may be associated with a change in the environment, since a growth is seen in both the control and the treatment groups.…

This experiment was performed to test the effect of different wavelengths of light had on photosynthesis. According to the results gathered we can say that if two plants are put under different lights, one green and one a normal light, that the plant under the normal light will perform photosynthesis at a higher rate than the plant under the green light. This experiment is important because it shows us the effect of different wavelengths of light had on photosynthesis.…

The Article: Plants 'Thrive' Next To Friendly Neighbors And Trees 'Gasp' For Water? Interesting! By “DOGO News” is about plants being able to talk to each other and grow next to each other because they want to. If you have ever noticed that certain plants seem to thrive next to each other, it may not be random, but because they want to be next to each other. At least that's what Monica Gagliano, thinks. She thinks that plants use some kind of sound indicating to talk with each other and depending on if it is good or bad it may allow the weaker plant to live or die. What's even more remarkable is that the scientist believes the talking can happen at the germination stage. She showed with some chili pepper, basil and fennel plants. She began by planting the chili seeds in isolated dishes next to fennel plants. Not many germinated. Then she conducted the same experiment next to some basil plants. Sure enough, the chili peppers not only germinated rapidly, but also, thrived. , Monica thinks that provided with this data, farmers may be able to use sound to encourage or discourage the growth of certain plants, helping to reduce their dependence on fertilizers and pesticides.…

Although this experiment did not support the initial hypo these, there were three other experiments that did. The first experiment was performed by Jessica Whorley and Brent Weaver. Their results showed that blue light caused plants to grow a significantly less than red light. The other two experiments were performed be Warsh et al. 2001 and Bahramzadeh et al. 2001. There results also supported that blue light did not cause plants to grow faster. Both of their experiments showed that red caused more growth in plants than blue lights, but theses experiments were conducted in shorter and fewer…
