How Does Jesus Show People Are More Important Than Law
‘How does Jesus show people are more important than the law?
Do you agree? Explain why or why not.’ Jesus suggests that people are more important than the law through many of his actions and the things he preached, that went against or undermined the strict Laws the Jewish society he was born into held to. Many of these actions and the things he said could be interpreted to mean that Jesus did not think these laws were not applicable in some circumstances anymore and so needn't be obeyed, resulting in him prioritising people, and more importantly, love, over some of the laws. Jesus first specifies that people have priority over law in Mark 2:2328, where he states in particular ‘“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”’. This suggests that he was challenging the ‘ruleworshipping’ society that the Pharisees had created, where it was no longer about keeping the laws to honour God and for the benefit of man, but instead about abiding to the laws and being punished if you didn’t. In stating this, Jesus is emphasising this and suggesting that the laws were not the most important thing, and mercy on the people was more important if the laws were not kept than punishment. This idea is again submitted in
John 8:111, where instead of punishing the adulterous woman, Jesus grants mercy on her and instead says ‘Now go and leave your life of sin.’ This again implies people are more important than upholding the law, although it is obvious that each scenario is different and must be handled accordingly. Instead of emphasising law as the most important thing, Jesus instead introduces Love as the most important commandment over keeping the law. This is made apparent in Mark 12:2831, when Jesus stated the most important commandment is ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, ...soul, ...mind and ...strength’ and the second being ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
Jesus goes on in Luke 10:2537 to specify that being someone’s

Continuing in this thought, I feel the bulk of this essay is composed with a limited understanding of the relationships between the scriptures recorded in Matthew, Romans, Galatians and even Colossians as they relate to keeping the law. Colossians explains the stance that I hold most clearly. Here the scripture asks that they let no one judge the way they practice the law “which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ”. [2] In my opinion, all the Old Testament laws were a shadow of the law as Jesus Christ…

Loving your enemies does not seem easy, praying for them even harder, and doing both for those who persecute you, practically impossible. Conversely, during the Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Matthew 5:43-48, Christ calls his followers to love their enemies, a calling that perhaps seemed just as contrary to first century culture as today’s culture. However, as seen through Christ’s ministry on earth, he did not call his followers to what seemed easy, but to radically transform their lives to adhere to a higher standard of righteousness. This paper will, through investigating the historical, literary, and theological background of the passage, address Christ’s calling to a higher standard of righteousness, in pursuit of perfection through…

The Jesus Creed has really helped me to look at Scripture from what I believe is a more biblical and Jesus centered perspective. While I have read the words Jesus used from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Leviticus 19:18 many times in Scripture, I never considered how all His teachings might have stemmed from them. I did not know Jesus had amended the Shema of Judaism because I didn’t know there was a Shema before reading this book, but now knowing this I can more clearly see what Jesus was doing. He was correcting a misunderstanding how some used and understood the Torah. Most paid excellent attention to the letter of the Law; however they had failed to grasp the message that God had called them to partake in His redemptive mission. Just as the Israelites got tangled up with the letter of the Law and missed their calling, are we as the Church today also failing to answer the same call? I believe it’s far too easy to make a case that we are, especially in America. Jesus redefines what it means to love God, instead of showing love to God by observing the Torah, Jesus calls people to follow Him, and in doing so He equates loving God to having a personal relationship with Himself thereby amending the Shema, making it personal. Next, He adds to the Shema by using a Leviticus passage saying “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love of God and love of others is the core of Jesus’ Shema and loving God means following Jesus. McKnight believes the Jesus Creed is the foundation of everything Jesus teaches about spiritual formation and after having read his book I have to say I agree. Everything Jesus does is out of love for God and for others as illustrated time and time again throughout the Gospels.…
