A Beautiful Tragedy The summer my family and I uprooted from our wonderful life in Florida to take on a new adventure in Kodiak, Alaska, seems like the last summer of my childhood. I never realized, until years later how bittersweet those days would be. Only memories now, they remain precious to me. After a long but remarkable summer stay at my Grandfather’s house in Arkansas, my older brother David and I were feeling apprehensive about this new chapter in our lives. My eldest brother Johnathan, who was currently in Boston exploring his options with the military, could not believe the journey we were about to embark on. Florida to Alaska is a pretty big leap, right? Just a twelve year old timid and freckle faced kid, I didn’t even know who I was yet, and now I was displaced from my element, to be thrown into the elements. Sprays of cold seawater mist hit me in the face as a warm wind blew across the surface of the deep swaying water below and the smell of fish permeated the air. When the ferry docked, I remember saying, “Oh my God Ma, where are we?” “Yeah man, where in the hell are we? You guys have to be kidding right now right,” My brother snapped. Only fifteen at the time, he had a bold tongue as well as a strong desire to be a big fish in a big ocean, making Kodiak very undesirable to him. My Mother being the positive person she is, smiled at me and my brother and said, “Kids, enough negative. We are finally here and it’s been a long journey. As long as we have each other we will be just fine.” Uncomforted by her optimism we had no choice but to continue on into our new Alaskan lifestyle. While exploring the island, David and I discovered the sweet ripened Salmon berries and Russian berries scattered in the bushes alongside a meandering river. The rivers were flooded with fish and the grand mountains were so close and majestic that we could not find the words to describe them

I cast my line, memories of the days my father and I woke up before the sun to race all the other fishermen, and the birds, out so that we could get to our spot. Even when all our tricks and luck failed we always fished at the same spot. Our spot had both of the two grand tactical advantages that we as fishermen usually look for; the cover of the hanging trees, with shade to keep us cool, and it was close enough to the shore so that we could still get the good fish. On the shore nearby we could hear the small blue birds chirp and the white fuzzy rabbits chasing each other. The many wildflowers that surrounded the lake, of which I know no names, made it even more colorful, Like a brilliant pinwheel spinning gently in the cool morning breeze the colors normally distracted me since I was young and the only thing that would bring my attention back was when my father decided it was time for a joke.…

It was the first weekend in august, so it time to take the long, packed road trip down south where it is hot as the earth’s core itself. I wonder who I would get to see this time go around. Every year I found out that I had a new cousin, aunt or, uncle. I have no clue where these people come from they just pop up, but when they do its all love in the air. My family was huge like the Brady bunch times ten. It’s like the NBA All-Star game, because all these people come to one city flying from all over the county just for one weekend of events. This time we were heading to Louisiana.…

Back in the 18th century, it took very little effort to have fun. Simple games, such as hopscotch, jump rope and other activities made from natural materials brought laughter and happiness to families across the world. In the year of 2006, the definition of having fun has been digitally changed fro teenagers. Mass media and new technologies are giving teens many ways to express themselves and to have fun, which of course, comes with a costly price. Media technologies have been changing throughout the past century, affecting not only the communication methods amongst teens, but also their social and psychological behaviour. With the help of newly invented cell phones, television which has oversaturated the world, as well as the seemingly omnipotent World Wide Web, teens are exposed to thing that they should not see. The excuse is that is it fun and entertaining. What most teens do no know, is that they are slowing creating a generation of people who are very dependent on technologies and attention. This has an obviously negative impact on society because people take information for granted and they are willing to spend more money just to save some time in their lives.…
