Unit 9 Essay Assignment

Human services professionals are forerunners in the work to improve the lives of families and the child protection efforts in every community. They work diligently with many community professionals - including law enforcement officers, health care providers, mental health professionals, educators, legal and court system staff, and care providers- to support families in need and keep children from harm. Part of this work relies on the knowledge of resources available in the community and the services offered through many of the community professionals mentioned.
Prior to this assignment, my common knowledge of intervention resources in the
Austin, TX area was a little limited. I was aware of the 2-1-1 directory that provides connections to resources available in the local area and of the Texas Health and Human
Services Commission and their connection to SNAP food benefits, healthcare, childcare assistance and TANF (Temporary assistance for needy families). I knew with a little time and research it would not be difficult to locate additional resources in my area because I had a little knowledge about where to start. So I started at www.211texas.org.
The Center for Child Protection is the first stop for children in Travis county that are suspected victims of physical and/or sexual abuse, neglect and children that have witnessed a violent crime. This agency provides recorded forensic interviews, medical exams, counseling and intervention services. They also provide educational services to professionals, parents and the community and group classes for the parents involved in these cases .
These services are beneficial in the protection and care of children but offer limited resources for the education and counseling needed for family preservation. To

access these services a client must call the toll-free 24-hour abuse hotline at
1-800-252-5400 or online at https://www.txabusehotline.org/.
