The tank tops worn by students at Upper Perkiomen High School should not completely eliminated without spoken reasoning. Listed as the seventh rule in the student handbook, it is stated, “Tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, and garments with spaghetti straps are not permitted in school” (52). This rule states that students may not wear any top that does not cover their shoulders. My thought process, and many other students, believe this rule is absurd and has no true meaning. Students have never been clarified on why this rule is in place, although we are expected to follow it. Is it because the administrators think possible bra straps are provocative? Is it just plainly because they think shoulders are distracting? Students…

    High School Cliques

    • 815 Words

There are a very high amount of cliques in high schools throughout the United States. Many teenagers believe the only way to be recognized is to be in with the popular crowd. How can cliques be regulated so that the people who do not fit in are not traumatized for the rest of their lives? There are many factors that bring out cliques in high schools, some are based on wealth, style, race, and interest. But in many cases there are cliques that are mixtures of these types. In my opinion, they all can be very demeaning.…

    High School Confidential

High school in real life is full of surprises, but according to David Denby in his article "High School Confidential," High School in the movies is very predictable. The typical Hollywood "High School Scene" opens with the jock and the cheerleader characters. Blonde and buff, the Jock and the Cheerleader are superficial and proud to proclaim it. They are popular and perky, and always too good to be true. The cheerleader is usually the enemy of the hero or heroine. She is generally rich, blonde, and queen bee of the social circle, with no sense of selflessness. The jock is usually the bully, muscular, good looking and not very smart.(Denby 343) In an essence, the male counterpart of the cheerleader. The Jock and the Cheerleader are almost always the doppleganger of the hero and heroine. The jock and cheerleader stand for everything the hero despises, yet seemingly have everything that the hero is aiming for.…

Imagine living in one place all of your life. In this place you have a home, a family, friends, activities that you have committed yourself to and possibly even a car. You feel safe in this place and most likely have developed an everyday rut of doing things. Change doesn't happen often in this place and if it does the transition of one thing to the next is uneventful. Well, this is all about to change. You are now going to be uprooted from your place, your home, your family, your friends and your activities, just to be placed in a new environment full of change. Let the old place be called high school and the new place is called college.…

I’ve been in MHS since my freshman year, I walked into the school knowing A handful of students and now I’m walking out knowing everyone. I have built so many different relationships good/bad ones throughout my four years being here. I’ve experienced my good and bad days here. I’ve had accomplishments and failures. I feel like I matured a lot, not from the school itself but the path I took in this school which is something I hope no other student ever experience. Everything that I know now that I didn’t know my freshman years feels like I taught myself, my learning method has always been in trials and errors before I actually learned from it and progressed and that’s what my four years have been. I had good grades also bad grades throughout school and it wasn’t anything due to my behavior or me not being smart but I can most definitely blame it on my laziness and if I was to really put my mind to it without a doubt I can do the work that’s handed to me. I am a pro at procrastination, which usually leads to me not accomplishing what needed to be done on time, so I just totally gave up on myself and began to walk around with this “I don’t care” mentality. I don’t usually regret things because I obviously went through them for a reason which is to learn from it and I did but I wish I can turn it all around because now I’m sitting here stuck on the edge not knowing if I will be walking on June 6th Thursday afternoon which is a really scary feeling. It’s sad how when the time officially approaches reality begins to kick in when it should have a long time ago. I can sit here and blame myself and not anyone else for everything I brought on…

The red bricks, stacked on top of each other, distract me from realizing where I am going. Looking out the window, the tired teens sigh as the bus advances towards the building. Other large, yellow buses also approach the uneven sidewalk, which leads to the school. Finally exiting the tightly-packed bus, the exhausted teens walk slowly off the bus and onto the sidewalk. Walking within the crowd, each step I take becomes one step closer to the closed doors. These doors are the Gates of Hell. Once you enter, you cannot leave (until 2:14 PM). Inside, at a glance, everything appears to be white. Like a dirty white, or beige. Beige walls, with tape stuck in the crevasses of the bricks to hold up colorful and motivational posters, line the inside. The crowd advances at a slow pace like cars stuck in traffic. The smell of Axe rapidly fills my lungs. Suddenly, more and more brown doors start to appear on the beige walls. New hallways create an intersection. The tiles of the floor look like a heterogeneous mixture of tan, white, and black materials. A glass showcase, displaying the artistic abilities of many students, forms a five second art show. Even further, there’s “Main Street”. Composed of mainly lockers, this is the prime and busiest hallway in the building. Wandering around, I attempt to understand the confusing setup. Clenching onto my florescent orange paper, I discover new hallways branching off of Main Street. Hallways labeled “G Hall East”, “G Hall West”, “F Hall East”, “F Hall West” on wood with white, engraved letters. More brown doors are in these hallways. Each door leads to a different destination, yet each destination looks similar. The same heterogeneous mixture for tiles, the same beige brick walls, the same white boards, the same desks. Regressing to Main Street, I, and other baffled teenagers look like lost puppies as we continue to explore.…

After reading this article I thought to myself that this is exactly what high school sounds like it is just a social combat, some people are already on the top and do not have to try and others try to climb to the top but never make and some just stay on the bottom they do not even make an effort to climb. I know that in adolescence us teenager try to find out who we really are and to be able to define ourselves and according to the article high school is one of the hardest places to do that in. But I think that even though people experience social fear because they are sensitive towards what other people think and have the least amount of control I think that high school is beneficial because it prepares you if what is ahead. Because in life you will encounter these things so it is better to have experienced it before hand but the difference between life and high school is that in high school it is really easy to be judged and labeled where as in real life you do not really fear what others think because after high school you find who you really are, you bloom, and you become more confident in yourself and stand for what you truly believe in. So I think that even though high school can be hell sometimes it really prepares us for what is ahead, because life is not fair and we have to learn that the hard way.…
