Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

Hansberry wrote her play, A Raisin in the Sun, about the Youngers, a penniless, African American family in the 1950s, who are each yearning to achieve for his/her own version of the American Dream. When the husband and father of the family died, each saw the incoming insurance check as a gateway to make their dreams come true. Mama Younger desires for a house with a garden where her family will be happy. The son, Walter, is determined to go into business for himself. Ruth, Walter’s wife, wants to keep her family close and desires a bigger space for the family due to her expecting a new child. Beneatha, Walter’s sister, is set on becoming a doctor. What happens when a raisin is left out in the sun? It becomes hard and friable and shrivels up
