Subject: My thesis on Gun Control
By: Michael Hendrix The history of ownership and the current law under the 2nd amendment gives the rights to the people to keep and bear arms. Our society has passed laws regulating the ownership and use of firearms and more legislation is being considered. Some restrictions may be necessary but some have gone too far. Currently, there are over 70 Million gun owners in America. Guns are not for everyone. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately. Most of this legislation restricts, to some degree, the rights of individuals to possess or use firearms. I recognize that criminals have misused firearms, often with tragic results, but I must point out that a few individuals committed those crimes. We should punish the individuals who commit these crimes, and we should imprison those who pose a threat to society so that they do not have the opportunity to cause harm. Punishing law-abiding citizens by passing restrictive gun laws is wrong. Guns are not the cause of this country's crime problem. Criminals are. Effective crime control legislation must control criminals, not guns. Effective crime control legislation should provide more prisons to lock up these criminals, and more police officers to deter crime and capture criminals. Effective crime control legislation should give the law-abiding citizens of our country the means to defend themselves. It should not restrict the rights of responsible citizens to own or carry firearms. If someone is considering purchasing a firearm of some type then I believe proper training at a gun range should be employed to learn safety, protection, and how to properly handle a firearm. Firearms can be dangerous in the wrong hand that is why I believe firearms’ training is important.     On December 17, 2012 Jesus Manuel Garcia became upset because his girlfriend had broken up with him. Jesus text messaged his girlfriend saying he was going to go to the restaurant he worked at, and shoot someone. His girlfriend called the police about his message but by that time Jesus Manuel Garcia was at the restaurant he worked at, armed. He walked in and attempted to open fire but his weapon jammed. The patrons and employees fled the restaurant to the movie theater next door. Jesus followed them into the lobby and opened fire, hitting a man in the chest. By this time, an off duty police officer, who was working security, followed Jesus Manuel Garcia into the men’s’ restroom. He did not fire at her but because his gun was drawn the off duty officer fired one shot and wounded Jesus, the off duty officer then seized his weapon and arrested the would be killer. Both Jesus, and the man shot were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. This story was not all over the news, unlike the Newtown shooting. In my belief, it was because no one was killed and the “bad guy” with the gun was stopped by a “good guy” with a gun. Because the media could not use this story as another example to ban or make stricter laws against guns. I do not think that laws should be any stricter to get guns, but the ones in place do need to be enforced.…

However controlling the sale and distribution of firearms is necessary because of the homicide rate involving guns. In 1988 there were 9000 handgun related murders in America. Metropolitan centers and some suburban communities of America are setting new records for homicides by handguns. Larger Metropolitan centers have ten times the murder rate of all Western Europe.
