Group Development Observation System
The eight category statements of the Group Development Observation System (GDOS) are dependency, counter dependency, fight, flight, pairing, counter pairing, work, and unscorable (Griffith & Dunham, 2015). These statements are key to have good verbal communication within a group to avoid any misunderstandings that could lead to a failure of the end goals. With so many different personalities within a group, one or more of these categories seems to fit in every group. Dependency is not to confront the dominate one in the group, but to ask other team members on what to do. This statement is following other team members on what they think you should do. Counter dependency can be used if you have bad leadership and rely on your team members to come up with ideas to lead in the right …show more content…
They do not want to engage or give input on the task, and will do whatever is decided amongst the other team members. Teams need the pairing statements and wanting respect. The pairing statements can come from having a good relationship with your team. Having team building events can get the team closer and get to know each other. Counter pairing is good to a point, where business is business and nothing is personal. However, you have to have a business and personal relationship with your team members to be a successful team. The work statements are the most important. You have to have these statements or why are you in a group at all. We all come together to make sure we are all on the same page on the tasks that need to be done to get to reach the successful end goals. Lastly, unscorable statements are those that come from the quiet person or the person that does not really understand what the team is trying to accomplish. None of the people on the team might not understand what this person is trying to say. To be successful with your team, communication and relationships are most important. A good team works together as one and all wants to achieve

An effective team will always consist of certain features enabling effective team performance.     In my opinion, the most important factor that aids a team to work effectively is to have an established goal that each member works toward. When each individual is aware of the direction of team, they can consistently contribute their ideas and insights to achieve that goal. Therefore, my primary objective in this course is to actively seek the best ways to achieve the goal at hand.     I chose to observe a sex offenders group at office of an association of licensed professional counselors in Hinesville, Georgia. The group consisted of 9 sex offenders and the counselor, who was a woman, and myself. The group meet in the evening and everyone was present and on time. We sat in a circle, and I was introduced.
