Grass Decomposition Lab
Grass Decomposition Lab

Problem: How do temperature, sunlight, amount of moisture, and presence of oxygen affect the decomposition of grass?

Controlled Variable: Amount of grass and water in each container.
Independent Variable: temperature, sunlight, amount of moisture, presence of oxygen.
Dependent Variable: decomposition rate of grass.

Hypothesis: I believe that there will be the most decomposition in high temperatures, low sunlight, low amount of moisture, and high presense of oxygen. If all these variables are true, then the grass will decompose at a higher rate.

Design: Materials:
7 plastic cups of 100 ml distilled water rubber bands sharp pin or probe freshly cut lawn plastic food wrap marker triple beam balance Method:
1.

Method:
1. Find a group of 3 people, each person a member of the village.
2. Set up your materials so that the paper (lake) is taped in the center of a desk. All cups (boats) an equal distance way from the paper. Add your fish, but you cannot have any more that 20 M&M’s (fish) in the habitat at one time. Two straws (poles) are to be stuck together with tape so that they’re connected and bent.
3. For each generation of fishing, you must suck air through the straw catching an M&M in it. Then carry it over to your cup and drop it in. You have 10 seconds to do this.
4. After each fishing season, collect your data- the number of fish you caught.
5. Before the next season you must re-populate. One fish per every two, but don’t forget your limit of 20.
6. Once you’re finished, count your total fish and record it into the database. $10 per fish, the winner is the one with the most money collected.

The pile of M&M’s represents the phytoplankton population in a lake. The printed “M” on the candy represents the amount of DDT (in ppm) the algae ingested from pesticide runoff from a nearby agricultural area. There are 100 M&M’s in the pile. Each circle below represents on phytoplankton. Mark the amount of toxin each phytoplankton has ingested. If there is a full “M” stamped on the candy then that phytoplankton has ingested 1 ppm of DDT, so write “1” in one of the circles below. If there is no “M” on the candy then that phytoplankton did not ingest any DDT so write a “O” in one of the circles below. If there is a partial “M” on the candy then estimate how much of the “M” there is. For example, if there is only on hump of the “M” then that would equal ½ a unit of DDT ingested by that phytoplankton so you would fill in one of the circles below with ½.…

The game begins honestly enough. You hurl your fish snare over the side of a little, retro-pixelated watercraft. As it slips, you stay away from the passing fish on the grounds that when you catch one, your snare begins to climb. In transit up, the game changes: now you need to snare the greatest number of fish as you can before you hit the water's surface. The more profound you go, the trickier it gets, until you snare the uncommon manager sort fish at the base of every region.…

Once I soaked the samples I covered to opening of the cup with my hand and poured out all the excess water. I then slowly poured my first sample on the top tray but thin time not in the middle more like a third of the way from the edge. And again I slowly started to tilt the tray upwards. Once I saw movement I stopped measured the angle of the tray and recorded what I observed. I then began to lift the tray again and once I saw the saturated sample move again I measured the angle of the tray and recorded what I saw. I then tilted the tray until all the sample had slid off the edge of off. Again I measured the angle at which this occurred and recorded what is saw. Repeat these steps for all…

    1. The management strategy changed from setting an annual total allowable catch (TAC) and allowing the fishing fleet to fish until the TAC was reached. In 1990 the fishing season was only 6 days, most of the fish caught had to be frozen, gear was lost or damaged, and crews were endangered when the weather was bad. Now the individual quota system is used, so owners of fishing vessels can decide when to fish within a season that last(s) as long as 8 months. The fishers got an increase in income and could fish in better weather, and losing less fishing gear.…
