Going to public school can be a challenge for anybody, but for a christian teen, it comes with many more challenges than I could've ever imagined. Keeping up with my faith at school, but also allowing myself to be like everyone else is something I've struggled with my entire life. I don’t want to be an outcast among my peers, but I also knew that God wants us to be a living testimony of his love. I never wanted to be the Christian that everyone knew and had negative feelings about, so I hid my faith away from my friends at school. As I got farther away from God, I noticed it was easier to fall into peer pressure that came into my life. I began to be like everyone else and I was losing my testimony.     Department of Communication and Mass Media University of Wyoming Laramie, Wyoming, USA Currently, limited research exists that explores the socially taboo topic of interracial dating between African Americans and European Americans. Historically, African Americans and European Americans have had a highly destructive relationship of enslavement and oppression, which has resulted in a history of mistrust, according to P. H. Collins (African American Feminist Thought : Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment, New York,Routledge, 1990). As a result, this relationship symbolizes the institutionalized oppression embedded in race relations despite the very intimate nature of this romantic relationship. Using the centrality of race within the context of romantic relationships, this study was designed to determine how race in uences the communicative process. Q-sort methodology was used, which required participants to determine what waiting, hinting, direct, and third-party intervention strategies they would use to initiate a date in both same-race and interracial contexts. Findings reveal that when comparing verbal strategies across both contexts and open-ended responses to likelihood or reality of dating interracially, participants were resistant to the idea of dating a person from another race. External factors such as family and society were cited as primary deterrents to involvement in an interracial romantic relationship. In general, participants in this study used more social distancing strategies for initiating interracial dating relationships than same-race dating relationships.     My name is Sarah and I am going to discuss the challenges of being a Christian teen in today’s school system and how I can overcome them. There are many challenges that I face being in a public high school system. I have been bullied before and wasn’t too sure how to solve the problem. I asked many friends and they were always like just smack the person. I don’t like to use violence in that situation because violence isn’t ever the solution to any problem. I pray to God when I have a problem in my life and he sometimes helps me with it. Another challenge that I also face in high school is getting peer pressured. Peer pressure is the worst thing that teens in high school face. You get pressured into drinking and smoking and much more stuff. I say no to anyone who asks me to anything like that, some of my friends at school drink and smoke and it’s very hard to get out of all of the pressure they put on me. They say when you smoke it makes you feel good and when you drink it’s a better way to party, but I SAY NO I would rather spend my Friday night at the Underground or with my family. When I invite people from my classes to the Underground they ask what we do and I tell them if you come you will figure out. Another problem that a lot of Christian teens have in high school is figuring out who they should hang out with. I have had that problem a couple of times but if something goes wrong then I figure that they aren’t the right group to be with. Being judged for who you are is the biggest problem that I think most teens challenge in high school.
