Girl With A Kitten
For the Final assignment, the image I chose to analyze and critique was Girl with

a Kitten by Lucian Freud. My first impression of this piece was that it was pretty

perplexing. There is not much happening in it besides a woman who seems to be

strangling a little kitten without what seems to be any remorse for doing so—so,

naturally, I immediately had questions regarding what exactly is happening in this work.

Though there is still so much to understand and comprehend about it, I initially liked it,

not just because it is another oil painting. It tells a story that I want to learn more about.

To start things off, let’s talk about form. This painting is exactly what the title

presents it to be, although not in the lovable, cute manner you would expect upon

The title does not lie, it’s a painting of a woman with a kitten,

though the title does seem leave out how exactly the two are interacted. The main three

visual elements that can be identified in this piece are color, light, and shape.

For color, it is pretty well balanced between dark and light colors. For the light

colors, there is the woman’s light blue shirt, the beige wall background, and the woman’s

soft red lips. As for dark colors, there is the woman’s hair, her eyes, the cat’s fur, and

arguably the woman’s skin color. It is pretty noticeable to the viewer that there is an

obvious use of value when looking at the woman’s face. The left side of her face is so

bright that it sharply contrasts against her dark, brown hair, whereas the right side of her

face almost blends in with the hue of the slightly darker wall behind her. Though there

are light and dark colors, all of the colors used are a duller color compared to the pure,

saturated color originating on the color wheel. The dullness of her face and hand can

almost make the viewer believe that without the contrast of her dark hair, she could even

blend in with the equally dull

He speaks the truth in a creative and artistic way. The message here is to bring deity such as Jesus Christ closer to humans, as there is no difference between god and human beings. For instance, in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” the competitor’s candy shops are shown to have de-saturated colors. With Wonka’s candy shop business booming the other candy shops are creating odd sorts of candies to beat out Wonka, local kids are seen trying each of the candies out. The shades of the other candy shops lacks in color compared to the vivid color used in Willy Wonkas candy shop in order to show how important to the community and financially Wonka’s store is. The soft colors of the competitor candy stores create a mood of despair, because the muted colors show how unimportant their stores are becoming due to Wonka’s. Such as in “Edward Scissor Hands” there is a high key lighting over the pastel houses as mothers and fathers are heading to work one by one in an orderly fashion. The color of the cars and homes match, streets bare of trees, yet look aesthetically pleasing. The light in this scene makes the suburbs feel mellow and calm, giving the effect of a pleasant area and life led by the people there. The soft colors also create an appearance of a peaceful neighborhood. Hence, light and color can create moods of weakness and…

The bust features an array of colors covering the entire surface of the figure. A soft, brown color is used for the face and neck of the bust. This realistic color compliments the smooth surface, allowing it to appear to have skin. The lips are painted with a calm, red color giving her mouth a soft look to it as well. Her eyebrows and eyes are outlined with black, with the right eye missing paint in the center. The artist uses color to give Nefertiti lifelike quality from a bust of limestone and plaster. While the color of the skin is common, the color of the hair is not. The hair is painted with a rich blue color giving the bust a sense of power and beauty. This sense of power is reinforced with painted jewelery in the hair and around the neck. Shades of blue, green, red, and gold are all found within the jewelery. The majestic beauty of the bust is enhanced by the colors of which it is painted.…

As I walked around with a copy of this piece in my school bag for a week or so, I often thought about what I could possibly say about this painting/artist. Also during this time, I shared this painting with a couple of people, and asked them what they thought of the piece without telling them what it depicted. One individual stated, “They look sad about something.” Another individual stated, “The people appeared shame for some reason.” Then I informed them what the piece was and they wanted to look at it again, they were quite impressed with the work after they realized what it was about.…

To left of the photo a Holy Bible is hidden slightly behind the draped hand of Cobain. Next to the Bible is a glass of red wine, next to a plate of a fish on the floor; all contribute to LaChapelle’s religious theme. Love is also wearing a blue dress, the Virgin Mary in numerous Renaissance paintings often wears this color of blue. Beer cans with the image of Christ sit on a table in the back with wine bottles, beside which is a light stand, which says “Faith”. Electrical lights in the image have no shades and add rawness to the whole scene. An hidden light placed behind Love’s head diffuses light so it gives her almost a halo effect. Colors used by LaChapelle are vivid reds, oranges and yellow colors. The most vivid blue used draws the viewer’s eye to Love at the center of the photograph.…

Despite the crowded scene your attention is immediately focused on the young woman, as does the attention of a few of the members of this high society gathering. Immediately, as the center focal point, as though she were entering the party just ahead of you, you find her there with her thick brown hair, toppled loosely along the back of her head in a French bun, fastened with ornamental combs, laced with tri-colored feathers; pink, white and red. Her skin is soft, young, with a natural pink porcelain tone. Her dark brown eyes stand out as she looks out amongst the people with a delicate close-mouthed smile on her very femininely featured face. Her era appropriate dress is fine and fancy. A very full, light pink chiffon gown embraces her. The ten-plus layers of ruffling on the lower half of the dress spreads out as she walks through the room. The large pink bow on the rear bustling of her dress accentuates her young curvaceous figure as black velvet enhances her youthful waistline. She wears long, dark toned, almost brown gloves. They reach past her elbows so as to meet the short sleeve of the dress, leaving no skin to be shown. Following suit is the high-collar of the dress, which reaches her jaw line. The large feather fan she carries in her left arm adds to…
