Gender roles
What are traditional gender roles in society? For the US and most of the Western European countries, men are traditionally known as the providers and protectors of their families and women are known as the nurturers who look after the family and raise the children. In that system, the man is the leader of the household, and the man is to be more competitive and masculine. Likewise, that system dictates that women are to be submissive, care for the children, keep the house clean, and support the husband. Traditional gender roles also dictate how people should dress. In that system, boys and men are supposed to wear short hair, no earrings, very little jewelry, and shirts, pants, or shorts. Women and girls are supposed to wear earrings, long hair, blouses, skirts, hair bows, and smell sweet and like flowers. Gender is defined as the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex, and gender role is defined as a public representation of ones gender identity. Compared to what we see today those expectations have changed for the better. My most important experience sought me out. It happened to me; I didn't cause it.

My preferred companions are books or music or pen and paper. I have only a small circle of close friends, few of whom get along together. They could easily be counted "misfits." To be plain, I found it quite easy to doubt my ability to have any sort of "close relationship."

After the closing festivities of Andover Summer School this past summer, on the night before we were scheduled to leave, a girl I had met during the program's course approached me. She came to my room and sat down on my bed and announced that she was debating with herself whether she wanted me to become her boyfriend. She wanted my reaction, my opinion.

I was startled, to say the least, and frightened. I instantly said, "No." I told her I on no account wanted this and that I would reject any gestures she made towards starting a relationship. I

Off the bat, I concluded that she really wanted me to go mainly because she blushed. I didn’t want to let her down, so I smiled and gave her a nod. She had a pretty gaze. Thurmer wasn’t like average stuck up girls I’ve met at Pencey. Selma sort of reminded me of old Jane Gallagher.…

I just sat there for 15 minutes spacing out until she slapped me in the face and walked away, at that moment I knew she liked me. The next day I told all my friends, they all said the same thing “It was just a coincidence”, I thought otherwise. The next morning I walked up to her and asked her how her day was. She responded with “Good” while yawning. I could tell she had a rough time falling asleep last night. Almost like a weight was on top of her the entire night. I took her to the movies that night and we watched ‘Minions”. The movie was 1 hour and 47 minutes, after the movie we went to ‘Potbelly’s’ on a romantic date. After that we headed to my house, things were starting to get serious. I walked up into my room and found her already lying on the bed, she was in a short red nightgown. We start talking and she tells me how romantic the movie and the dinner was. We laid down in bed together and watched cartoons for a while until we both…

Gender roles are an increasing topic in society. From joining the military to walking down the street men and women everywhere have been fighting for equal rights for all genders. Before I talk about that though, I want to talk about the effect that traditional gender roles have had on society today. Throughout the years of mankind, it has been implied that the man of a relationship is in charge. This may be true for some people and that in fine and dandy, but what if your wife or daughter wants to be a politician or a lawyer. Traditionally the man works and the wife cleans, cooks, teaches, and takes care of the children.…

The next day I was getting ready to leave for class when she walked in the backdoor. She had brought home a few groceries so I helped her carry them up the stairs. It was then I began to ask her about her day at work. She first began to tell me how she had a rough day because some of her co workers came in late. She wasn’t in the best mood but I still kept inching closer. After about thirty seconds she gave a confused look and awkwardly began backing up. I couldn’t help but to laugh at the look she gave me. I started explaining that it was an experiment for my sociology class and it wasn’t until then that she found humor in the situation. We laughed together for a few seconds and she asked me why did I choose her? I told her that I knew she would give the most honest response.…

Gender roles are expectations of how a person should act, dress, and talk based on his or her sex. A majority of people conform to these roles at an early age, and will continue to carry these beliefs, often unconsciously, around with them throughout their lives, and these beliefs can affect people negatively. The message that gender roles send is that in order to be part of society, you must fit into the predisposed mold for your gender, or most importantly, what society deems as acceptable. But at the same time, try to incorporate individuality and establish a sense of self.…

Today’s television shows have made an effort to stray from the classic American family and the gender roles within it. While gender roles aren’t as evident as they use to be, that’s not to say they do not exist. The Brady Bunch is a perfect example of gender roles existing even in a non-traditional family in the 1970’s. In a more current show, Full House, we also see a non-traditional family without a mother, but after looking closer I found that gender roles are still there.…

During resource period, I met up with my friends and we went to the library, our usual hangout. While we were doing our usual rounds of discussing Pokémon and debating on which Star Trek captain was superior (It’s Kirk), the girl I liked walked in. Since I was a little boy, I always dreamed of falling in love. I always desired to meet the girl of my dreams and one day, hopefully, to marry her. I never imagined she would appear in my life the day I least expected it. In the tenth grade, I used to go to the mall every day after school. I started meeting new people and eventually they became my friends. But it wasnt until February 19th, 2006 that I saw something amazing. I was at the mall and I saw this beautiful young lady that filled my eyes with obsession. She had an appealing body; she had green eyes like an untouched rain forest; her face was astonishing, I could have taken her to participate in model competitions and she would have won. The first thought to knock on my head was This girl has to be mine.…
