Gen 105 Week 1 Assignment
Write a response of 200 to 300 words to explain how courses work at University of Phoenix. Use each of the following terms at least once in your explanation: *
Threaded discussion
Electronic forum
Asynchronous communication
Feedback
Online
The Internet or the web
Participation grade * * * Distance learning can seem daunting at first glance, but once you have taken the time to understand how it works you may find that it can be a better option than the typical brick and mortar school. Distance learning is most recently done via the internet. You can go online and log into the student portal to access your classrooms. This can be done on your own time, whenever you have the availability. Most of your class work is done through asynchronous communication. In other words, your fellow classmates and professors are in different locations and communicate through threaded discussion and email. As part of your course work, you will be required to respond to discussion questions in the main forum. As part of your attendance, you must post at least twice to these discussion questions. In order to make your participation grade you must also respond to other classmates’ posts twice on at least four different days. Your initial response to the discussion question does not count towards your participation grade, so it is very important to keep track of your posts. You will also have required reading to complete and individual assignments due throughout your classes. Your professor will give feedback on your assignments in your individual forum.

Distance Learning: Distance learning is in many ways self-directed learning. It requires a high level of responsibility, dedication, and self-discipline on the part of the students. In this course, you are responsible for your own work, your own progress, and your own grade. In order to succeed, you need to back up every piece of work you do on disk and make a hard copy. If you experience computer difficulties you are responsible for solving your own technical problems. Heavy internet use occurs during the evening hours of 8-10pm. You might consider logging on at other times if possible.…

My biggest motive to further my education is myself. According to Malcolm Knowles research there are four different motives that stimulate adults to learn. The “Practical Context” suggests that an adult is motivated to learn because the knowledge he/she gains will be put into practice whether it’s immediately or in the future. This person feels that the information will help him/her cope with daily situations with more ease. The “Experiential Context” this adult learner is someone that has become wise with age and has formed a solid foundation about what they know through personal experience. This person is open to fresh ideas and adapts to new situations and in the course discovers a newly refined sense of logic. The “Idealistic Context” refers to an adult that is motivated to learn for the sake of learning. This type of learner takes pleasure within the process of a deeper and more theoretical development. Even though theory is more interesting than practice this person knows that practice is still essential. The last motive is the “Personal Context”. This motive is attained through the desire of self-betterment. This describes my personal motive for learning.…

The University of Phoenix’s classes that I am taking are all online. I start by accessing the Internet and logging into my ecampus student home page. There I am able to access my classes and see all my needed tools listed under each class. One of the main items you have at the University of Phoenix is your participation grade. You earn that grade by completing discussion questions and participating in discussions in the electronic forum. The electronic forum consists of the Main forum, the Chat room and the Course Materials forum. In those forums you will find all of your discussions. The discussion topics are all threaded discussions so you are able to follow each topic easily. One of the things I like about the electronic forum, is that you receive feedback from not only your professors, but all so your peers. This feedback is helpful for me to learn about the others views as well as mistakes or corrections I need to make. With my busy schedule the part of the University of Phoenix that best suits me is that your course work falls under the Asynchronous communication model. This way I am able to complete my course work at anytime during the week no matter what part of the world I am in. It gives me the flexibility to be able to attend college unlike the traditional Synchronous communication style of schooling.…

There are always disadvantages to distance learning. Students that are not responsible and determined will have a hard time coping with a self paced, self-sufficient course. Students that actually want more reliable help with their class work would rather take a college course at an actual college rather than taking an online course. Personally, I would prefer to go to a real college rather than to take an online course as I am now. Sometimes, I get a little exhausted dealing with the military life that I procrastinate a lot. The student must be motivated and determined enough to complete each assignment, if not, then instead of gaining success in this method of study there will only be failure.…
