From Now On, Let Women Kill Their Own Spiders Summary
``Why do men open a drawer and say, `Where is the spatula?’ instead of, you know, looking for it?''. This is an excerpt from the article “From Now On, Let Women Kill Their Own Spiders” that the author, Dave Berry, attempts to answer. He says that even though men have problems, women can’t be called perfect either. Both genders have their faults, and they should realize these imperfections to not only better themselves, but also their relationships. It is a lack of communication skills that Barry credits the problems in men and women’s relationships. He says that this communication breakdown that happens between couples is what usually leads to bickering and fighting among the genders. I personally agree with the author that communication is …show more content…
For example, the initial question asked by Susie Walker of North Augusta, S.C. inferring that men are incompetent and far less than women provokes negative feelings in both men and women. Moreover, Barry responds to the question in a satirical negative way as well. To illustrate, he first states that he could, but will not indulge in Susie’s example of negativity and then he makes a comment of how dense women can be sometimes. This just shows how one negative comment can start a whole chain of unyielding negativity between people. For instance, a personal example can be taken from my place of employment, Wegmans. Namely, the instance when I cashed out a customer who was ranting about how much the customer service in the store was lacking. I tried to clear things up by explaining our policies to her, but she just scoffed at me and walked away. Consequently, this run-in with the upset customer not only left me a bit irritated, but also everyone else who received my negativity later on. All of these incidents could have been avoided if people were to just bite their tongues when they wanted to say something negative and properly communicated

The title of our zine is Fatal Femininity, which brings artistic awareness through poetry, comics, beautiful song lyrics, artwork, and empowering words from famous women. What we want our readers to know about our zine is that it strongly focus on the empowerment of women and brings up the issues dealing with the conformity of women (i.e, how society tells us how we are supposed to act and dress). Our zine shows images, and artwork of how women do not need to conform to society, but instead be whoever the hell we want to be. The first page of our zine we have poetry by Maya Angelou called phenomenal women, which uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language explaining how remarkable women are and how women are in control of themselves. On the second page, we have a comic…

At first notice he employs a feeling of simple impersonation and innocent humor. However, after listening, one begins to realize that his impersonation goes much deeper. Secondary thoughts begin to surface and innocent humor turns into harsh ridicule and mockery. He speaks on old people, children, Jews, Irish, African Americans (which he refers to as "niggers"), and Italians. Each group is addressed as the scum of the earth. He takes stereotypes and prejudices and gives them a voice. His phrases and word usage have a bold honesty to them. He consistently speaks of making groups "just go away." But he abstains from his harsh comments by repeating that they would not have to leave by blood shed. This effectively adds to the arrogance of his character and truly reveals the power of satire. Another action he consistently refers to is spitting on certain groups. He sets up why he dislikes each group. Then, whether it is the drunken Irish, Italian criminals, or slow old people, he then follows with stating that if he were to see these groups he would just "spit on them." This is reintroduced over and over again to remind the audience that they are dealing with an obnoxious person. This technique also reinforces the arrogance of his character in that it shows that he lacks the will to come up with intelligent solutions or justification for his…

You Just Don’t Understand Women and Men in Conversation by Deborah Tannen is basically an explanation on how women and men converse. Tannens main goal is to give advice to the different genders in order for them to avoid as much conflict as possible. Tannen’s main ideas are to explain how differently women and men react to each other’s way of being. It’s like they’re in their own little world while living in the same big world. Men tend to try to dominate situations and tend to always want to be at the top. Women do not tend to want to get into conflict but tend to show understanding. These big differences bring them into conflict. A Tannen explains, “What he wanted conflicted with what she wanted”. (40) Women and men are constantly clashing in opinions.…

The problems in here, they do not want to talk each other to explain what they really expect it to be. Whenever the men going home rather they just go to sleep or no want to talk because even when they try to argue, the women will talk about her topic of view if the men show his new topic, the women will get mad at the men. As an example how do you think when a husband and a wife slept in the separate bedroom and slipped into separate life, here I know for sure that the men just go home to take a nap after a busy day in work and the women will feel betrayed, hurt and angry because their husband does not want to talk, to share and to rebuild a relationship with their wife. But the women did not know when they are quiet is that time he is trying to concentrate on what she was saying. The author was trying to experiment about listen to body languages and the result is the women make more listener-noise and the men were being trying to experiment about listen to body language and the result is the women perceive such responses as belittling and…

After reading the two articles “I Want a Wife” and “From Now On, Let Women Kill Their Own Spiders”,I find a better way to reduce both women’s and men’s complaints is for women to learn how to love themselves. The first article is written by Judy Brady from the point of view of women; even though is a woman, she wants a wife because a wife does all the housework in a family (Brady 542). In another article, written by Dave Barry, entitled “From Now On, Let Women Kill Their Own Spiders”, the author humorously appeals to men, telling them not to spoil their wives but to let their wives do their own business, like killing spiders (Barry 539).…

In my opinion, I think that after reading this article, it makes me wonder how some spouses do not have the same wavelength as their partners. I have been with my partner for twenty some years now and we both know what each other is thinking, I can finish his sentences before they even come out of his mouth. I have the best man in the world because anytime I am feeling down, he always knows how to pick me up, he will go out and pick me some flowers just to get me in a better mood. I remember one time when I was sick, he did everything from making me something to eat to bringing me a hot cup of tea with honey and lemon in it. I love him so much! I don 't know what I would do without him!…

Reflecting on this article, I agree with its contents. As we get closer in a relationship, we dismiss the fact that we could be misunderstood by each other on certain situations or certain scenarios. “Getting close to someone appears to create the illusion of understanding more than actual understanding” (Health Day 2011). When this happens, we can become angry with the spouse because we expected them to understand what we meant or said. As couples, we want to believe that we are on the same page all the time because we are so close. Whether we are face to face, back to back, in another room, or on the phone with each other, misunderstanding can and will happen without further questioning from the other spouse. When something is said, it is the other spouse’s responsibility to make sure they are clear in what they are hearing. Without this tactic, there will be misinterpretations between the spouses. This creates unhealthy communication between the spouses.…

I would like to share another example. There was this famous pizza place in the town where I live, the business was always very busy and lots of customers, the food is amazing. One day, the son of the owner started making racist comments to the gay community on his Facebook page, and people took those comments very serious and started making lot of bad publicity to the pizza place. People were very mad and stopped going to the pizza place, and even thought it wasn’t the owner who made those comments, the sales went down, and the business is not as successful as it was.…

Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. We've all heard the saying, but what does it mean? We are different, that goes without saying. As evidenced in Raymond Carver's "So Much Water, So Close to Home", men and women differ on many key issues of morality, perception, and judgment. The two do have something in common, believe it or not, and that is the expectation of the opposite gender to communicate, think, and react in the exact way they do. Hence, frustration. Not with themselves, God forbid the two ever see a situation from each other's point of view. The frustration is with the opposite gender, over something that for the most part, they cannot help. As we have seen time and time again and as Carver proves, it's in our blood.…

It has been observed that men and women tend to live a problematic life due to communication gap in their marriage. Men are goal- oriented and competitive and this is expressed in the way they speak to others. Women cooperate more and relationship oriented during conversation. Women are much more able to empathize with others while men look to understand the problems of others intellectually, Because of this; men tend to be problem solvers while women tend to be listeners.…

The second main difference is that men and women hold different views about communication, which leads to deeper misunderstanding. One divergence is the expectation of communication. .In a marriage, most wives hope their husbands to be conversation partners, but few husband share the same opinion. Therefore, in 1990,most women regard lack of communication as the reason for divorces. The other divergence is the understanding of the importance of communication. Women think that conversation is an significant method to create harmony and maintain intimacy. In this way, they wish their husbands to be further best friends, so they can share their thoughts and feelings and enjoy the sense of closeness. However, men don’t assume that talk…

    Lack of Communication

Lack of communication is the number one cause in divorces in the United States, while there are marriages that work out there are many that don’t. For every two marriages there has been one divorce in the 21st century. (Britannica) Often in a relationship we don’t consider the small things and we move to quickly not thinking about the opinion of the people we interact with. In this article by Aziza Shumba she gives very clear, concise details on why communication is important in a relationship. An interesting fact I happened to stumble upon while reading was that a lack of communication can affect all aspects of life, from what you like to wear to what color paint you paint your home. Some couples feel like they communicate but the key is communicating effectively. Communicating effectively means communicating thoroughly, being optimistic, keeping an open mind and having a listening ear to new opinions. This is very important when it comes to using it in the work place, considering many people just go along with what they are told and never speak unless spoken to. In the work place many people have usually one of three issues: they never speak their opinion, the person who is overbearing, or the person who rides both sides of the fence, it doesn’t make a situation easier but it does make it easier when you can talk to someone and they can keep a conversation without criticism, ignorance or pessimistic attitudes. This is also a great way to build a better relationship with the ones you work with by giving you a stronger confidence when speaking and communicating. Although effective communication is very important, planning and time management is very important when communicating with people. I figured out this is very important once I got to college because if you don’t have good time management it will disrupt your whole life schedule and those around you. For example if I decide to wait until the last minute to turn in homework at 11:55 at night, and then my…
