The issues of neglect and abuse in the foster care system is a subject you do not hear about every day. However, this is a real problem that affects millions of children living in foster care or some kind of transitional care system. 75% of children in foster care prior to leaving the system will have experienced sexual abuse (Sexual Abuse: An epidemic in Foster Care Settings). According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 475,000 U.S. youth reside in foster care, close to 30,000 leaves the system annually (Braciszewski & Stout, 2012). Research shows that 1.5 million children in America live in families that have experience domestic violence and 7 million of them live in families that have experienced some severe form of domestic violence (Ogbonnaya, 2012). Even though research indicates that the identified incidents of child sexual abuse has declined 47% from 1993 to 2005-2006, this is an issue of concern that the public is not fully aware of the magnitude and effects it has on young people. While the public is not aware of the depth of this problem, child sexual abuse is a prevalent health problem children face with an array of consequences to follow (Child Sexual Abuse Statistics).…
The number of children in foster care continues to rise each year, reflecting the flaws and problems within the system. It is a known fact that children who have been abused or neglected often have a range of unique physical and mental health needs (First Focus, 2008). The Massachusetts foster care systems seems to be struggling with the following issues: providing safe homes for the children, reducing the length of stay in foster care by increasing the adoption rates, improving the education system and health care systems for both children in and those transitioning out of foster care and a plan to provide adolescents with better life skills to foster independence after foster…

He raised his three children, one of which was born with her bladder on the outside of her body. His youngest daughter, Misty, had to remain in the hospital for the first 30 days of her life due to her condition. His first wife Vickie was sick with heart disease and diabetes during her and Kenneth’s relationship. This evaluation will support the GRL program facilitators in analyzing and measuring the effects the program has had on the girls’ overall choices and behaviors after completing the program.…
Have you ever been taken by (defects) foster care. Well, foster care is a temporarily arrangement in which adults provide for the child or children whose birth parents are unable to care for them. To determine whether Phony boy Curtis goes to foster care or stays with his brothers will have to acquires him of staying out of jail, correcting his bad habits, and having a stable environment. One way that Phony boy Curtis goes to foster care is that he will have to stay out of jail. There will not be any fights, but with the people who supposedly adopted him a least for about a couple of weeks or days. There will definitely not be drug realization, nor be in a gang related apparel, but if happens he will be took to a new home. The second…
When a child or adolescent poses challenging behaviors, there is a lack of permanence in a foster home which results in numerous amounts of new placements. These new placements and foster parents increase the instability of positive outcomes and/or healthy attachments which hinders their future relationships. Those feelings can create a sense of worthlessness, lack of trust, and an unstable adulthood. Overall, the environment where the child is placed can destruct the self and possibly create negative outcomes that affect others as…
Foster care is transitory housing where children are brought when there are circumstances in which their parent or guardian does not have the capacity to take care of them. Children and youth enter foster care because they may have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by these figures. Foster children are no different from children who aren’t in foster care: they are learning and growing, like to play and hang out with friends their age, and need the love and stability a permanent home provides. However, the foster care system has faults that require reform.…
Foster Care is designed as a temporary service that responds to crises in the lives of children and families, giving the help that they need to have a happier healthy life. Most children develop a positive relationship with their parents as they get older to become a better person and do the same thing; giving support to other children who are willing to be a part in your family, like they are your own. You can have a tremendous impact on a child in need by opening your home and your heart. Foster Care takes extra care to place children in just the right homes and provides specific training and support to assist each child in developing positive social, educational and emotional skills and discovering their strengths and potential for future…
As implied by many physiologist a child’s attachments style is the building blocks to his or her mental development. A child like a structure is sure to crumble if there is a crack in their foundation. Foster children have the potential to stand tall or crumble due to neglect. Attachment styles tend to vary in foster children since they bounce from home to home. In this paper I will discuss the attachment styles foster children share with both their biological and foster parents, as well as the foster child’s potential outcome due to these styles. In order for children to develop both socially and emotionally normal there must be at least one primary caregiver and this is what tends to be the problem with children in foster care.…
Foster Care is a system for kids that are not in a healthy home or that do not have parents. Kids that are in Foster Care suffer from the sense of being left alone, from being unwanted, and being lost. These things create life long problems and an unstable emotional life for kids in the system. Children in the Foster Care system is overflowing, the time children spend in the system is incredibly wrong, and many children suffer from abuse in their household that they are placed in.…
The Foster Care systems that are in operation today are very minimally funded and provide a very low success rate of the children that come out of the foster child system in most states. Because of these facts, the media labels this system and not only a last chance scenario but also almost as a punishment for children because they were not adopted or have not been adopted by families yet. The system has many flaws and the media exploits those flaws regularly without any action taken by the government or governing bodies that manage the system. Because of flaws and their exploitation in…
