The role of their teachers is to extend and deepen children’s ideas and theories. Through careful observation, documentation, thoughtful questions and deep reflections, their teachers work in partnership with the children to negotiate curriculum, extend thinking and develop explorations.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children represents the early childhood profession. Their book on developmentally appropriate practice and accreditation criteria define quality programs for young children. Developmentally appropriate environments help children develop in all areas—physical, social, creative, emotional, and cognitive. No one area of development is more important than another in the early years of a child’s life. It is often not possible to separate children’s development in one area from another. For example, as a child masters a physical skill such as climbing, self-esteem grows. The new physical skill makes it possible for the child to learn more about the world and to interact with friends.…

The teachers do excellent with the greeting and departing of students, meals and snacks, and health practices. Young children show separation anxiety as they become upset when their parents leave them. So the teachers create a welcoming atmosphere that allows the children to feel comfortable, so when the parents say “goodbye,” the child is prepared for the departure and knows that their parent will back in a few hours. Also, the child can use the caregiver as a secure base, which permits them to explore the classroom environment and return to the caregiver for emotional support if need be. Areas that could be improved are diapering/toileting and safety practices. There is no schedule that has checks of the diaper changes every two hours. However, all the students except for a handful are only at the school for three hours. Regarding safety practices, there are some areas in the classroom that pose as safety hazards such as open stairwell access and mats that have foot-catching…

Eileen Kennedy-Moore once wrote, “The path of development is a journey of discovery that is clear only in retrospect, and it’s rarely a straight line.” Although the development to which she is reffering may not be specific, the complexity and sometimes unpredicable nature of children may definitely be summarized by this short quote. As humans, we begin as tiny beings with barely any ability, but, as we grow, we develop into creatures of play and imagination, of right and wrong decisions, and of motivation for the tasks we face in our day-to-day lives. As an Early Childhood Education student, I often have the opportunity to volunteer and to observe a variety of organzations, classrooms, and programs. For this particular class, I was able to analyze a classroom-like environment at the YMCA for children of all ages, and I compared these observations with the appropraite topics of this course.…

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development’s Study of Early Child Care found that children at the age of four spending more than 30 hours a week in a daycare center became demanding and aggressive. Throughout this study as they tracked the children they found that by the time these same children reached third grade they scored higher in math and reading and the aggressive behavior had dissipated. They also mentioned that the aggressive behavior reported was still in normal range for the age of four, and it should not be cause for alarm. Sociologist at Stanford and the University of California found that cognitive skills in math and reading were strongest when a child entered a center-based program between the ages of two and three (Lewin). These studies show evidence that there are many beneficial…

After observing both programs, I noticed that both schools have benefited from tailoring the services and programs provided to their communities. It helps early childhood programs become more effective at reaching their students.
