Topic B
Choose an issue of importance to you—the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope—and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.
Topic C
There may be personal information you want considered as part of your admissions application. Write an essay describing that information. You might include exceptional hardships, challenges, or opportunities that have shaped or impacted your abilities or academic credentials, personal responsibilities, exceptional achievements or talents, educational goals, or ways in which you might contribute to an institution committed to creating a diverse learning environment.

THE COMMON APPLICATION ESSAY
Personal Essay Please write an essay (250 words minimum) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. Please indicate your topic by checking the appropriate box. This personal essay helps us become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself. 1 Evaluate a signifiant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you. 2 Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you. 3 Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence. 4 Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence. 5 A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix.

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

In fact, the huge topics that dominate national debate will often miss the point of the essay question -- the "impact on you." The most difficult ethical dilemmas facing high school students are often about high school. Should you turn in a friend who cheated? Is loyalty to your friends more important than honesty? Should you risk your own comfort or reputation to do what you think is right? Tackling these personal dilemmas in your essay will give the admissions folks a good sense of who you are, and you will be addressing issues that are central to being a good campus…

Describe a person who has influenced you" is the opening phrase of several personal statement prompts that go on to ask that you provide details of what that influence was. The major mistake made in these personal statement essays is that candidates make the essay about the individual and that individual's achievements and character, which is all fine, but not if it is at the expense of detailing how that person has influenced you. The other mistake candidates make in response to this prompt is that they answer with the intuitive "first response," which is usually a parent. And there is nothing wrong with offering a parent as the influential person - but only if in so doing, you can show that it was your parent who provided you with the abilities…
