Compare the ways in which Carter combines the fairy tale and the Gothic in ‘The Courtship of Mr Lyon’ and ‘The Tiger’s Bride’

Below are some suggestions for what your essay might contain. However these are not prescriptive, feel free to develop your own response as much as possible.
You could:

Compare the openings of each story – you might explore the Winter setting and the use of snow as a symbol – how does the opening differ in feel and tone in each story? You may feel the first story seems much more romantic and fairy tale like whereas the second seems much harsher in tone.
Compare the character of Beauty in each story. Does she fit the Gothic female stereotype of a victim? To what extent is she objectified? Look at the change of narrative from 3rd and 1st person- why do you think Carter makes this change and what does is add to our view of Beauty?
How does the father figure compare in each story – does Carter change Gothic or fairy tale conventions through this character?
The setting of the Beast’s home. Compare and contrast each setting –inside and out. Does either seem like a fairy tale castle or fit the isolated castle of the Gothic? Carter often gives her settings a greater symbolism – what is symbolic in either setting?
Compare the supernatural character – the Beast - in each story, and the way Beauty feels about him. Does she feel scared by him in either story? What aspects of his character does she notice?
Compare and contrast the storyline of each story? Are there any differences in the events which take place? You might explore the card game, the use of gifts, the automaton and the horse ride in the second story.
Compare the endings of both stories – in particular the way that in the first, the Beast becomes a man and in the second, Beauty becomes a Beast. Discuss in detail these differences and the ways Carter changes the fairy tale and subverts the Gothic. Which ending do you prefer and why?
What do you think is the theme of each

I figured out the themes of each story. Because in the broken pitcher she finds a fairy and the pitcher turns into a live pitcher only for the Cinderella Character. The theme is important in some things but not everything is. The theme is Friends are always there for you. Another theme is in the other story Ashley Pelt. The theme is Never give up because she doesn't give up when she wanted to go to the party and she got to go. She had fun at the party but she had to leave before 12 o’clock. The Values for the poems are Trust your friends in The Broken Pitcher because she needed to because it was the only friend she would get. In Ashley Pelt the value is Be truthful and don't hide because she didn't tell him she was there until the last minute.…

Within Carter’s short stories, she may present a sinister distortion of family relationships by subverting ‘typical’ family roles, perhaps in a way that has a harmful or negative outcome for particular family members. She could appear to do this through the presentation of the parent and child relationships in The Snow Child, or the husband and wife relationship in The Bloody Chamber. The Gothic element of the stories is emphasised through the ‘sinister’ aspect of these distortions, as the relationships Carter presents can be somewhat disturbing. However, in some of her stories it appears that family relationships are not distorted, such as the mother and daughter relationship in The Bloody Chamber or the father and daughter relationship in The Courtship of Mr Lyon.…

For example in the stories there is a difference in the ways of preparation between the characters. In the article, “Survival is the Ultimate Goal in World’s Toughest Sled Dog Race,” The author explains that, “sleds[are] loaded with food, kibble, and survival supplies.” whereas in the story, “To Build a Fire,” the man is only prepared with food and matches. This means that the people racing are way more prepared than the man in the short story. In the same articles/stories it includes more differences, one being that they both take very different amounts of time. In the article about, “Survival is the Ultimate Goal in World’s Toughest Sled Dog Race,” it says that the race lasts up to ten days! In the short story, “To Build A Fire,” the man only lasted 12 hours before dying. This shows that there was a huge difference in the difficulty of the journey. Therefore there is a numerous amount of differences in the two articles/stories. In conclusion the stories have countless amounts of differences and similarities that can be…

Before analyzing the way in which Carter created a Gothic story from the tradition fairy-tale of Bluebeard, we must first understand the meaning of ‘latent content’. Freud explains latent content to be ‘the forbidden thoughts and the unconscious desires which appear in the manifest content but are disguised and unrecognizable.’ However, in saying this, the manifest and latent content can sometimes be indistinguishable (referred to as ‘Infantile dreams’); much like in the case of Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. Carter uses a process called ‘dream-work’, whereby she takes the latent content in Bluebeard, and transforms it into manifest content, to create something new and, in this case, Gothic.…

The Disney version of the Beauty and the Beast seems like it follows the original text by de Beaumont almost scene by scene just by glancing at the two. Each is aimed at the same audience which is young kids, both follow the same plot line and they also have a happy ending. But the farther the audience looks into the culture of the film and the text, the audience will then notice that each of these stories have little to nothing in common with each other. In the original Beauty and the Beast, by Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, she uses the culture from the time period and place in which she wrote the story which was the 1730’s in Europe. She used this culture to relate to her audience at the time. The Disney version of the story uses cultures from all over the world to relate to the audience and give them a perspective of how Americans view the rest of the world as a society. The underline message from each of the stories is different and is conflicting from the original text to the Disney film.…

A desolate setting is a place without life in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness. This is expressed in ‘The Courtship of Mr Lyon” when the girl finds herself “bored” in the country. This subverts the gothic as the country is associated with purity and feminine inexperience, compared to the male dominated, corrupted city. We see here that the girl longs to break the mould of female passivity with the “mean kitchen” and her boredom. “All the snow” and the words “light” “bright” and “white” infer purity and represents her total innocence but also isolation from the outside world, living down a long “unmarked” “country road”. Carter places the girl at the window in his tale and uses a lack of description of the kitchen to create a sense of longing for the outside world. She is trapped in the domestic sphere in the “kitchen” but “pauses on her chores”. This foreshadows transgressing gender barriers in the story.…

“Beauty and the Beast” is a classic fairy tale that has been retold through various media such as oral storytelling, written short story, opera, film and musical theatre. With each rendition the story is given a new perspective and a focus on different elements for the reader/audience to consider. In 1946 Jean Cocteau adapted Madame Leprince de Beaumont’s written short story of “Beauty and the Beast” for the film, Beauty and the Beast, starring Jean Marais and Josette Day. Each of these versions offers their own unique approach to the tale and have become classics in their own right. De Beaumont’s story was written so as to have it read and enjoyed by adults and children, whereas Cocteau’s film is aimed primarily at…

The modern version of Angela Carter “the Count Ship of Mr. Lyon” defines similarities and differences to the original fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast”. Carter story character compare to original beauty and beast are totally opposite. In original Beauty and the Beast the Beauty is more shy and reserve, and the beauty in “The Count Ship of Mr. Lyon” is more confident, because author defines beauty as a the modern cultural girl who have more confidence and she is less shy as todays girls are. On the other hand, Beauty defines in old cultural in which girl have little rights and less confidence. The other difference I find in old story father have children and in new version father have only one child beauty. In addition, in old story father allows beauty to live with beast forever, and in new version the father took beauty with him. Father comes in car instead of…

Most Americans could say that they have at least heard of Cinderella and her fairy godmother. In the German Version of Cinderella, “Aschenputtel,” there is no Fairy godmother. In “Aschenputtel,” Cinderella’s mother tells her “Dear child, remain pious and good, and then our dear God will always protect you, and I will look down on you from heaven and be near you." Later in the story Cinderella asks her father to bring home the first twig that brushes his hat. When given the twig Cinderella takes it to her mother’s grave and it grows into a magnificent tree. Cinderella then prays under the tree and pigeons and turtledoves bring Cinderella anything she wishes. These birds represent Cinderella’s mother’s spirit watching over her poor daughter. Animals, such as birds and mice, also appear in the Disney classic, but are more aides then guardians to Cinderella. These animals are introduced as humorous instead of saviors in the Disney version. The animals help her clean the house and do chores. Later on they also are transformed into steeds and drivers to take Cinderella to the ball. These differences give each story its lighter and darker feelings and dynamics affecting the readers’ emotions towards the animals and Cinderella.…

One of the most important juxtapositions that can be made between these two stories is that of Emily and Alison. They are ultimately the source of the story, without them there would be no plot. Both Emily and Alison are able to arouse fervent passion among men. However, the way that they are presented are different because one story is a chivalric romance told by a knight and the other is a fabliau told by an inebriated miller. In the “Knight’s Tale,” Emily is portrayed as pure and fresh; the Knight uses florid imagery to illustrate her beauty; he also utilizes metaphors to accomplish his description. The Miller portrays Alison as sensuous and vivacious. He uses animal similes, such as “her body as slender as any weasel’s, and as soft and tender” to give a fairly good idea of her image. Character wise, Emily and Alison are very different, with Emily being chaste and religious, while Alison is promiscuous…

Carter’s characterisation of the Count and “his wife” give us an insight into the gender roles that she is trying to portray. A general rule of fairy tales is that the males should be of higher class than the women, and they should also show a social dominance. However Carter seems to go against this theme from the very beginning of the Snow Child as she tells of how the Countess rides a “black mare” whilst her husband is on a “grey” one. This gives the reader their first glimpse of the authority that the Countess has.…

From the opening of each story the characters of Beauty both have very distinct personalities, in the Tigers bride in the first line we are handed is a cynical statement from Beauty “My father lost me to the beast at cards”, instantly she is complaining about her own hardship and we become under the impression that she cares only for herself. However in the Courtship of Mr Lyon we hear from Beauty in the first paragraph “I hope he’ll be safe” her only concern is for her father’s safety, not for her own, we hear the emotion in this and I understand her to be the type of girl to express her emotion unlike the Beauty from Tiger’s bride. We know this because of the way Carter uses the object of these sentences to give clue of their personality, Beauty (tigers bride) uses “me” as the object so the statement is steered towards herself whereas Beauty (Courtship of Mr Lyon) chooses to make “he” in “he’ll” as the subject which effects the perspective as its focused on her father and not herself .From a first glance the girls appear to be polar opposites, one whose primary concern is herself and another whose concern is selflessly for her father.…
