Personal Statement Prompts
Describe a person who has influenced you" is the opening phrase of several personal statement prompts that go on to ask that you provide details of what that influence was. The major mistake made in these personal statement essays is that candidates make the essay about the individual and that individual's achievements and character, which is all fine, but not if it is at the expense of detailing how that person has influenced you. The other mistake candidates make in response to this prompt is that they answer with the intuitive "first response," which is usually a parent. And there is nothing wrong with offering a parent as the influential person - but only if in so doing, you can show that it was your parent who provided you with the abilities

There’s an old saying by Eleanor Roosevelt that states “You can never really live anyone else's life, not even your child's. The influence you exert is through your own life, and what you've become yourself.” I believe this statement is true. However, what Eleanor Roosevelt fails to mention was who, or what kind of people come into our lives and influence us to change for the better. Do these particular individuals shape our paths, or our futures? Or when these people come into our lives is it meant to happen for a reason? No one knows for sure, but when we meet someone who leaves such a profound effect on our hearts and minds, like foot prints in the sand we remember them forever. Ben Carson always mentions that his mother helped shaped his life, as well as his family, students, teachers, his strong belief in god, and his love for books helped shaped his future. Throughout middle school, high school and college these key influences would lead him to what he has become today.…

Influence, the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. There is a good chance that most of us have been influenced by someone or something throughout our lifetime. We all offer the ability to influence, and to be influenced. In 2011 when I joined my school's marching band, I did not realize the influence it would have on my life by teaching me teamwork, self-discipline, time management, and dedication.…

I further explored my interest in medicine by becoming an Emergency Department scribe. As a scribe, I learned to work on a team with medical professionals and to incorporate effective communication to ensure the correct medical orders were placed. I was trained to write patient's medical narratives while also extracting vital information to place clinical orders in advance which decreased wait time for treatment. Scribing has taught me that I am capable of working long hours while also remaining alert with each interaction and how to work effectively and professionally when given a restricted time limit.…

As a non-traditional premedical student at Wake Forest, I have a unique perspective when it comes to medicine and path to medical school. I am a religion major because through my experiences on mission trips and my interactions with physicians over the years, I have come to realize that doing medical missionary work is something that I am really passionate about. This would allow me to utilize my clinical skills as well as my knowledge of religion and its impact on a person’s life in order to provide appropriate patient care and fulfill a societal need. I think it is important to articulate to potential premedical students that their path to medical school is unique and it is important to pursue a degree in what you are passionate about. As…

On this scorching hot summer day, I climbed exhausted through the bumpy, mosquito-infested path to the run-down Tanzanian orphanage, anxious and unsure of what to expect. My mind was pacing with questions and scenarios: Will I be capable of helping the orphanage distribute malaria vaccines? Will handing out mosquito nets be hard? What if the children don’t like me? What if I get fired? What if I hand out the wrong vaccine? What if somebody accidently dies? A half hour later, these questions were momentarily forgotten as I was being served scrambled eggs and Peri-Peri chili sauce over fries while listening to the orphanage director, Mr. Genoshi, talk about his medical experiences in giving emergency aid to Rwandans during the Tutsi genocide. In the following weeks, I spent hundreds of hours in sweat, distributing mosquito nets and anti-malarial vaccinations to orphans and local villagers. By the end of the trip, I realized how much I enjoyed giving medical aid to less-fortunate individuals. It was the smiles on the orphans’ faces when I provided them with food, stories, and vaccination shots that made me decide to pick the medical field.…

“You don't have to be a "person of influence" to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they've taught me.” – Scott Adams. I believe that the one person that has the most influence in shaping my life is my grandmother. She has taught me how to be independent and courageous. Many people say that I am a lot like my grandmother because she and I both have very similar personalities and characteristics. By spending majority of my time with my grandmother, I have realized that she is very influential to my life.…
