Experimental Analysis: 861-Grams Of Glacial Acetic Acid
Experimental
Part 1: Reaction
First the glassware apparatus for the reaction was set up. 3.861-grams of isoborneol, 2.21-mL of glacial acetic acid, and 4.39-mL of 6% NaOCl solution were mixed in a 125-mL Erlenmeyer flask. Another 35-mL of 6% NaOCl solution was added to a separatory funnel and supported over the flask. The NaOCl in the sep funnel was slowly added into the Erlenmeyer flask with vigorous swirling, approximately 2-mL every 30 seconds until all the NaOCl from the sep funnel had been added. The temperature of the reaction mixture was closely monitored using a thermometer to make sure the temperature did not rise above 50ºC. After the addition completed, a watch glass was placed over the reaction flask and the flask was allowed

In part B, three reactions were performed. In reaction 1, two Styrofoam cups were stacked together and placed in a 400mL beaker. Then 50mL of 2M HCl solution was added to the cup. The cup was then covered with the plastic lid, and the temperature probe was inserted through the lid and submerge in the solution. 30-45 seconds after data…

Dry, sublimed ferrocene (93 mg) was added to a reaction tube. Later, 0.35 mL of acetic anhydride and 0.1 mL of 85% phosphoric acid were also added. The reaction tube was capped using a septum, and a syringe needle was poked through. This was warmed over a steam bath and stirred for 10 minutes after it began to boil, forming a dark brown color. The tube was then cooled to room temperature, then further cooled in ice. A solution of 0.5mL was added, dropwise w/ mixing. 3M NaOH was added until the pH of the solution was neutral. The product was vacuum filtrated and pressed dry.…

In this experiment two solutions were prepared for two kinetic runs. Solution #1 (50%ethanol 50% water) and Solution #2 (40% ethanol and 60% water) was added to another Erlenmeyer flask. Next, 0.10M of NaOH was filled up to the 0.00ml mark in two 50-ml burettes. Placing the flask containing solution 1 on the magnetic stirrer and clamp a burette containing 0.10M of NaOH above the flask. The two kinetic runs will be carried out one after another. A stir bar was placed into the flask containing solution #1 and 3-5 drops of phenolphthalein indicator solution to the reaction flask. To start the reaction, 4.91x10^-3 mol of alkyl halide to the stirring reaction mixture. The timer was started at the instant of this reaction. When enough HCl formed to neutralize the NaOH that was initially added, the pink color turned clear. The time was recorded.…

Three test tubes were placed in a test-tube rack. A clean eye dropper was used for each alcohol and 4 drops of 1-butanol were placed in the first tube; 4 drops of 2-butanol were placed in the second tube; and in the third tube, 4 drops of 2-methyl-2-propanol were placed. After the 4 drops of each alcohol were placed in the test tubes, the next step was to add 10 drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) to each of the three test tubes. The mixtures were shaken very gently and the tubes were left to stand for 1 min while they were observed for evidence of cloudiness. Three more test tubes were set up for each alcohol to observe the reaction between the three alcohols and the KMnO4 solution. For each tube, 2ml of KMnO4 solution were carefully added then shaken gently. The test tubes remained standing for 5 min, with occasional shaking. After allowing adequate time for the reactions to occur, the test tubes were observed to determine if there was any colour change.…

To a solution of Carvacrol (0.02 moles) in 95% ethyl alcohol (20 ml), concentrated hydrochloric acid (20 ml) was added. The mixture was cooled to 0-5°C and sodium nitrite (0.015 moles) was added slowly in small lots in one hour. The mixture was stirred well after each addition. The solution first became brown in colour and a green precipitate soon began to form. After 0.5 g of nitrite had been added the mixture became pasty; so the intervals between the additions were lengthened and the stirring was made more vigorous. When all the nitrite had been added, the bulk of the product was transferred to a 250 ml beaker containing 120 ml of cold water and the remainder was washed with water. After agitation with water the product became a light yellow,…

An ice water bath for 100 mL of water was prepared. It was noted that gloves had to be put on at this time. 3.0 mL of 2,6-dimethylaniline in a 10 mL graduated cylinder. Then, a larger cylinder was used to measure out 15 mL of glacial (concentrated) acetic acid. This was poured into a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Both graduated cylinders were rinsed thoroughly with acetone several times. The 2,6-dimethylaniline was added via a Pasteur pipet to the acetic acid. The graduated cylinder was rinsed with acetone and left to air dry. 2 mL of 2-chloroacetyl chloride was measured and poured into the Erlenmeyer flask. A thermometer was placed to record any temperature change during this process. A large graduated cylinder was used to measure out 25 mL of .333 M Sodium Acetate directly to the Erlenmeyer flask. The temperature increased from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. 60 mL of…

Sodium hydroxide is a hygroscopic solid which means it absorbs water from the air. A weighed quantity of sodium hydroxide therefore contains an unknown mass of water. Therefore, a solution of known molarity cannot be made by dissolving unknown mass of solid sodium hydroxide in water. The concentration of the sodium hydroxide solution in water must be determined experimentally. This is done by titrating the sodium hydroxide solution against a primary standard. A primary standard is a substance from which a solution of known concentration can be prepared. The concentration of sodium hydroxide prepared is 18.75M with volume of 3.3mL.…

During the mixing of pyrrole-2-aldehyde with ethanol and 1,3-diaminopropane we obtain a colourless solution. As it is being heated under reflux, colour change is observed, the solution starts to change into orange-red solution. This is due to the fact that nickel ions are being suspended in the solution. After 4 minutes of heating under reflux, we finally cool it for 1 hour 30 minutes in ice bath, after this period of time yellow crystals start to form at the bottom of the round bottomed flask. After the filtering of these crystals, the remain yellow and after being rinsed with diethyl ether they change into a light yellow colour.…

After which 20 mL of ethyl alcohol was added (to act as a solvent) along with 20 mL of 25% sodium hydroxide solution (25% NaOH). Whilst the flask with its contents is heated gently in a boiling water bath the mixture was constantly mixed using a glass rod. Aluminum chloride (AlCl3, 1.45 g) was quickly added to the round-bottom flask by removing the rubber septum, with caution as to minimize exposure of moisture from the air to the reaction mixture. The rubber septum was replaced and the reaction flask was cooled in an ice bath that was prepared in a 100-mL beaker. When AlCl3 was added to the mixture, the mixture began to bubble, changing the color from yellow to a dark purple. Using a plastic pipet, acetic anhydride (0.6 mL) was added to the mixture. The ice bath was removed and the water aspirator was turned on. A hot water bath was prepared by heating 300 mL of…
