Evidence and Donald

Father Flynn’s Innocence In the film Doubt, Father Flynn is a priest of a catholic school who is being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student named Donald Miller. The accusations are brought upon by the principle of the school, Sister Aloysius. Those accusations that are brought upon him were not based on facts, only Sister Aloysius’s certainty. Even though Father Flynn could not be proven guilty or innocent, there was no evidence proving him to be guilty.
There may not be any evidence proving Father Flynn to be guilty, but realistically there is plenty evidence proving his innocence. First, when Sister Aloysius accuses Father Flynn of giving Donald Miller alter wine; he proved his innocence by pulling in an elder priest as an alibi saying that he caught Donald drinking the wine. Even though the elder priest said that he caught Donald drinking alter wine, it does not mean that Father Flynn gave it to him. In addition, even if Father Flynn did give alter wine to Donald, it does not mean that sexual activity took place. Sister James, a new teacher at the school, also gave Sister Aloysius reason to believe that Father Flynn is abusing Donald when she told her that Donald was upset once he returned from meeting with Father Flynn. Even though Donald was upset when he returned, it does not mean that he was upset with Father Flynn. The film makes it quite obvious that Donald adores the priest. Therefore, it would be hard to believe Donald was upset with him. He could have been upset at a number of things such as, conflicts between him and his father, his sexuality, his peers not liking him, or him being caught drinking alter wine. Donald never stated why he was upset upon returning meeting with Father Flynn so there is no proof that Father Flynn was the cause.
Sister James points out that Sister Aloysius isn’t very fond of Father Flynn because of some of his characteristics. This

There is no solid evidence to back up sister Aloysius’s belief that father Flynn is guilty. “I have not done anything wrong. As an actor playing Donald in Blue Remembered Hills you would have to consider the background of Donald. His father is not around and his mother abuses and beats him; this would have an effect on his confidence around his ‘friends’ and how forward he is with the other characters. This could be shown through the actors’ use of voice; is character would be played with a soft, quite voice, which would portray his distance from his boisterous, loud friends. He is also shown playing with the girl characters in the play, which shows how he is happy to play with the other sex, in order to be liked and accepted by others. This also shows the motivation of Donald’s character, which is simply to be accepted; he is desperate to be liked by the other children. He is also timid towards the male characters in the play segregating him and acting as the outcast in the play. The girls eventually do not accept him when they turn on him and torment him.…

The first evidence is the suspicion and the accusations attacking Father Flynn of giving young Donald Muller wine when called to the rectory. Now, of course Flynn defends himself by disputing Donald drank the wine by himself because of the nerves of being a lonely black boy in 60’s Bronx. However, when confronted with this exclamation by Sister Aloysius, Flynn immediately contracted into a cornered cat, with a sharp, witty defense strategy. “I don’t wish to continue this conversation at all further,” said Father Flynn upon exiting. Father Flynn says he covered for the boy because he cared, yet the story is immediately made unconvincing when Sister Aloysius…

A good person is someone who doesn’t turn away from those in need even if there may be a risk for themselves. Sister Aloysius is a good person because she refused to turn a blind eye to the potential horrors that were happening at the school. She was willing to destroy her reputation to help the boy and was going to do everything in her power to prove that Father Flynn was guilty. She even lied to her superior, Father Flynn, in hopes that she could get him to admit what he did; she even contacted the boy’s mother to try and get her involved. She put herself through all of this trouble, not even sure if she was right about her suspicions, to make Father Flynn leave so that the boy would be safe. Although her intentions were pure, she did not…

Father Flynn is a very beloved man; he was joyful, pleasure loving, well spoken, and socially agreeable just like the Friar. John C. Flynn was very popular and had connections with several people around the country. They would both accept lots of donations. Some differences are that Father Flynn was raised in a middle class family, while the Friar lived in poverty. The Friar was very good at bargaining with people. He would hear their confessions and relieve them of their sin in return for donations. Father Flynn would pay attention to everyone no matter what class, but the Friar would ignore the beggars and impoverished people because they could not help him. Lastly, despite the Friar being poor he was able to dress richly and live a quite wealthy life because of his bribery. Father Flynn was very faithful and never committed fraud with anyone’s money.…

    Jo March Character Traits

The character we chose to discuss is Jo March. We were mostly drawn to this young woman, since she has a passionate, stubborn, impulsive, and vivid personality. Jo has little patience and likes to see things go her own way. An example for that we can see when Amy asked her older sisters to join them and Laurie to the theater. As appose to her older sister Meg, who tried to decline her request very nicely, Jo answered impatiently to her sister, "'don't be a baby and whine about it"' (Alcott, 2004, p. 76). When Meg compromised and agreed to take Amy with them, Jo determinately stated, "'If she goes, I shan't'" (77). As it appears in the book, Jo not only declined her sister's request to join them, she did it in a rude and unpleasant way; "Her…

Academically it has been suggested that Father Flynn had syphilis, that he was mad, but there are some critics who believe that what Joyce does in describing Father Flynn throughout The Sisters is describe him as an old fumbling man (the snuff incident and falling asleep with the breviary), symbolising the archaic and not useful role of the Catholic Church in people’s lives. A church led by old men. When…
