Event Management Personal Statement
Sports have always been a passion of mine, whether it has been playing, watching, or even working in a sports environment. My time of playing sports will come to an end soon, and at that time, I still want to have direct involvement by pursuing a career in operations and event management for an athletic team. I believe that the skills I have developed from my extensive athletic career, including my competitiveness and ability to work efficiently as an individual as well as with a team, can have a lasting impression on a company. When combined with my enhanced knowledge and prowess from previous employment at both a baseball stadium and a soccer store, these skills can allow me to be successful in an athletics event management role.
One of my previous jobs was at the Frederick Keys Minor League Baseball stadium. Working at this stadium for three years really inspired me to look into a degree in sport management and pursue a career in a related field. Some of the tasks I was responsible for

A major theme I have noticed amongst the staff at these facilities is constant and efficient communication. Improving the effectiveness to which I interact with others from previous jobs is not the only way I have experienced personal growth related to this field. My inimitable soccer career has truly shaped my character and taught me some difficult lessons. Playing sports all my life has translated into my strong work ethic, attention to detail, leadership capabilities, and ability to handle pressure. Specifically, college soccer teaches valuable lessons in time management and prioritization since it requires a balance between classes and athletics. Altogether, my knowledge and abilities stemming from job experiences and sports have built me a solid foundation for future success in event

Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…

Explaining things that people don't understand has always been a strong point in my time within the community. In sports, specifically volleyball, I am more experienced than most of the people in my grade. When someone is having trouble with a skill like hitting or passing I gladly help them and explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Another quality that I have, is the ability to effectively communicate with others. Not only am I able to communicate with people that I am helping, but also with leaders within this club. I can communicate clearly and professionally through; email, text, verbally, and on the phone. When I have a planned absence from a sport’s practice, I notify my coach at least twenty-four hours before the scheduled start time. My work ethic has always been a strong point within my years of schooling. I have never been tardy to a class or skipped class to do things that I think are more important. Working in groups or teams has always been something I am good at. Working with teams efficiently and effectively is very important, this is especially shown on sports teams, were at practice if one person is slacking off it's harder for…

As stated in my career timeline, my goal is to become an athletic director for a high school. I believe this job will provide myself with personal fulfillment that I would not achieve anywhere else. For this interview I reached out to a family friend that personally knows the interim athletic director at Gordon State College, Gary Sharpe. Before holding his current position, Mr. Sharpe spent ten years as an assistant baseball coach for Gordon State College. Prior to his collegiate career he served as the head baseball coach for Upson-Lee and coordinator for the Georgia Dugout All-Star Games. Needless to say that Mr. Sharpe has crucial sport management experience from working at the collegiate and high school levels.…

Some duties or responsibilities have change, while others “enhanced”. At the high school level, increased workloads have led to burnout, while on the colligate level, the changes in rules and regulations has caused AD’s to take a more “businesslike” approach. I was working on a school project when I got a call from my dad saying he was coming right away to come pick me up, I remember the sheathing anger I felt arguing that no he wasn’t going to pick me up that I really needed to finish this school project. I still shake my head in dismay knowing the fact I in fact didn’t need to finish the project I just wanted to hang out with my friends. I can’t pretend that I didn’t sulk my way to my dad’s waiting vehicle that I looked at him with a scowl across my face. Nor can I wipe away from my memory the words he said next “Your sister is in the hospital, she’s lost her baby and she’s asking for you.” This complete wash of emotion that came over me the shame the concern I was mortified with myself. How could I have been so mad about my importance when my sister had just faced a devastating event? Looking up and saying “Take me to her.”…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

Along with administering health care, my main goal for working in this setting is to be a positive influence in students’ lives and give back to the community by making the athletes that I serve into leaders. Being a leader and equipping others with the ability to become leaders is a passion of mine. What many people fail to notice is that this is a crucial time for many students as they attempt to grow into adults and not all coaches and athletic trainers seize the moment to support them along their journey. I use this experience gained from sports to better deliver health care. I have seen the importance of being fully present for the patients by not approaching the conversation just to talk, but also to listen. I have seen the power of simply being compassionate and how that creates trust leading to more meaningful conversations. I have seen how humility can bridge social and educational boundaries allowing me to give advice without seeming superior.…

During my off season from soccer, I plan to be a sports commentator for ESPN or to open up my own personal training business. This will help me to make more money and allow me to continue to work after I retire from professional soccer. I would like to eventually be asked to commentate for the women’s FIFA world cup. If I do not follow through with my main plan because of injury or loss of interest, I would like to go to college solely for a degree in business and sports education. After graduating from college, I would open up a full time personal training business for soccer teams. There I would be able to teach many young players the game of soccer and help them to perfect their…

As an Accounting major, I am very interested and have become fond of learning about the varying business aspects within the sports industry. As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. She has worked with the University of Miami for the past 20 years and is currently the Chief Fiscal Officer for the Department and is a member of the executive management team. Below is a list of ten questions and answers from the interview I conducted:…
