 Cultural differences between United States and France Power distance
This dimension deals with the fact that all individuals in societies are not equal, and it expresses the attitude of the culture toward these power inequalities amongst us. Power distance is defined as the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally. It has to do with the fact that a society’s inequality is endorsed by the followers as much as by the leaders. US

The fairly low score on Power Distance in combination with the most individualistic culture in the world reflects itself in the following: The American premise of “liberty and justice for all.” This is evidenced by an explicit emphasis on equal rights in all aspects of American society and government. Within American organizations, hierarchy is established for convenience, superiors are accessible and managers rely on individual employees and teams for their expertise.

Both managers and employees expect to be consulted and information is shared frequently. At the same time, communication is informal, direct and participative to a degree. The society is loosely-knit in which the expectation is that people look after themselves and their immediate families only and should not rely (too much) on authorities for support.

There is also a high degree of geographical mobility in the United States. Americans are the best joiners in the world; however it is often difficult, especially among men, to develop deep friendships. Americans are accustomed to doing business or interacting with people they don’t know well. Consequently, Americans are not shy about approaching their prospective counterparts in order to obtain or seek information. In the business world, employees are expected to be self-reliant and display initiative. Also, within the

Power Distance: The US has a score of 40 in this category. A lower score in this category shows that our country doesn’t have such a wide gap between the groups that do or do not have the power in society. Brazil scored a 69 in this dimension. They accept more inequality between the leaders and less powerful in society. In their culture, it is important for them to know where they stand in the community, so they know how much respect to pay to another of more power. When selling into this country, we would need to understand who the leaders are on the project and be very respectful.…

I explained that a culture with a low power distance would believe in minimizing distinctions in social classes, as well as believe challenging authority is acceptable. She explained to me that Lithuania had a power distance somewhere in the middle, but leaning more towards high power distance. Kotryna explained that there are three main cities and in these cities people generally know each other and are very friendly, most people are considered equal. In these cities, the middle class and upper class live and work in nice conditions. There are other rural areas where the poor farmers live and work, as well as places where people who have power such as government officials live. Kotryna explained there is a definite difference between power distance in the cities where everyone is similar in social classes compared to the poor farmer areas. People of the city visiting the rural, poor farms is very rare, but if that were to happen, the poor farmer would not be the equal, there would be a high power distance to which the people in higher social classes were seen as better and more powerful, and the farmer would not be able to question these people much. She said generally the power distance would be situational and in the situations experienced on an everyday basis, people would stick to their respective cities and among the cities would be…

In fact, the lower level or followers in a society perceives and experiences the inequality of power. The power distance index provides insight into whether a society has a clearly established hierarchy or an attempt is made to distribute power. If the power distance index is greater than 50, the society is a high-power distance culture. A high-power distance culture is a hierarchical based. Power Distance is the extent to which less powerful members of a society accept the fact that power is distributed unequally. In cultures with large power distance, everybody has his/her rightful place in society, there is respect for old age, and status is important to show power. In cultures with small power distance, people try to look younger than they are and powerful people try to look less powerful. Malaysia scores highest on power distance at 104, Mexico scores 81, the United States scores 40, and Sweden scores 31.…

As I read the case study of Disney’s Euro Disney park in France, one of the first things that came to mind was how little research had been made on how Europeans act and think in general compared to the rest of the world. As stated on page 143, Disney had not correctly calculated the success rate of Tokyo Disneyland park, therefor, they did not take ownership in the park, nor did they make the park very big. The biggest mistake that Disney made, however, according to the reading, was that they took on too much debt in the development and opening of the park.…

Geert Hofstede (1928,-) came up with five cultural dimensions to compare countries on. All countries are ranked on these dimensions, according to their culture, and in that way we can compare the different countries. The cultural dimension that is going to be discussed in this paper is Power Distance, Power Distance shows to which extent a less powerful member of a company will accept and expect that the power in the company he or she works for is distributed unequally. It defines inequality, seen from below. This dimension suggests that the level of inequality of a society is endorsed as much by the followers as by the leaders. Of course, any society deals with the issues of power and inequality, but in some societies these issues are way bigger than in others. This is represented in the PDI, the Power Distance Index. If this index is high in a certain country, this country will make a strong use of hierarchy and the appreciation of social inequality will be relatively high. (The world’s average PDI is 55)…

In countries with a high Power Distance Index (PDI) the population seems to accept that there is a high inequality of power distribution. The use of that power is not necessarily abussive. The population actually believes that the inequality will produce more welfare for it's society (Nardon & Steers, 2006). A good example of a high inequality acceptance can be found in ancient Rome : The senate used to transfer it's authorities to a dictator when war was to be expected because Romans believed that one strong person was more fit to rule in times of crisis. The population of countries with a low PDI rather expect a more egalitarian and participative distribution of power. They expect to be consulted on various key issues that affect them in a substantial way. E.g. : Ireland (PDI : 23) held a referendum to decide whether to approve the European Lisbon-Treaty.…

I decided to choose this topic because in the modern world, where globalization takes over the economy, the cross-cultural communication is becoming increasingly important subject to address for organizations and especially for its Human Resource Management. Whether it is a multinational company with subsidiaries all over the world, or a manufacturing company with distribution network across continents, or just a wholesale company expanding to new markets, all of them may encounter cross-cultural difference problems among employees, with clients, with superiors, etc.…

Power distance refers to the way in which power is distributed and the extent to which the less powerful accept that power is distributed unequally. To be more specific, people in some cultures accept a higher degree of unequally distributed power than do people in other cultures. When in a high power distance culture the relationship between bosses and subordinates is one of dependence. When in a low power distance society the relationship between bosses and subordinates is one of interdependence.…

First of all, Power distance is the one of the important part in Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Power distance means that “ beliefs about the appropriate distribution of power in society. Which power distance level included high power distance and low power distance”. (Steers, et al., 2010, p.56). In Asia, normally many countries are representatives of the high power distance. Of course it also comprise Laos.…
