Ethical Issues In College Admissions

I worked with a student that is a junior this week on college admissions. I had the student fill out a college selection questionnaire, so we can have a session about his likes about location, characteristics, religious affiliation, atmosphere, and academics. The readings this week talked about ethical issues. According to Markkula Center for Applied Ethics (2009), counselors need to analyze ethical issues to make an ethical decision that possibly is critical to their session they are conducting. Some of the ethical questions an advisor should propose when they are in a session are could the situation be detrimental or damaging to themselves or someone else, is anything that is being said illegal, or could it harm someone one (Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, 2009). As I was beginning to start my counseling session, I let the student be aware that what they say to me is confidential and I will only report to my administrators if something is of great concern
I realized that the more I have counseling advising sessions, the better I become with helping students with their process on how to go about applying for college. The biggest success out of my counseling sessions was students did not have no knowledge on college admissions and how to pay for college; I gave them information that was helpful and they can use in the future. I printed things out for them to keep, so in the future, they can use that information when it is time for them to apply for college.

One challenge I had for the week was when I was observing and participating in the intake meeting with the counselor and principal. I had to prepare on conversing with the student that was going to be accepted into the program. As an advisor that is learning, I felt nervous on not saying the wrong thing. I have to be confident in my abilities and know that I am capable of doing my job with helping
