"Symbolisim, narrative structure, and special effects are significant feature of films." Focusing on ONE or MORE of these features, discuss the extent to which you agree with this view. Your response should include close reference to one or more films you have studied.
The use of symbolisim in the film Enternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, plays a crucial part due to the disjointed nature of the structure. These symbols are used to remind the viewer of what point and time Joels memory is actually at. The most noted symbols is the character Clemintines hair colours, the letter C missing for Lacuna business logo, the use of the colour blue and the use of Joel's journal.
Clementine changes her hair colour to suit her emotions at the time. We meet Clementine in the train to Montauk, with green hair. This is the first time the pair meet. She names this hair colour Green Revolution. This is as she is making a reformation within herself. Clem's hair is then Red Menace; these are the happy times with Joel, including the instances of her "leading" Joel around in his memory to attempt to salvage memories of her. Clementine faces annoyance with the situation she is in with Joel. Their relationship is at a risky stage in jeopardy with the trouble she has caused. The next paste she colours her hair with is Agent Orange where we’re shown the breakup of the relationship which finally leads to Blue Ruin, which is the same name of the blue Bombay Gin Clem drinks in the next scene. This is the 'post-breakup' and 're-falling in love with Joel' segment of the film. As you can see Joel and Clementine’s relationship progresses and deteriorates according to the colour scheme of Clementine's hair. Clem explains her reasoning behind dying here hair as “..apply[ing] my personality in a paste". As this film is hard to follow at stages the changes in hair colour acts as a narration to the film being a very symbolic attribute.
