1. Executive Summary Etap Hotel located all around the world with the total of 460 well-known hotel and is even the shining star in Europe offering the best place to enjoy and relax once you step your foot into its main door with a splendid service. Through internal research, we get to know that our company are using too much of money on buying stuff made up of paper. So we are planning to control paper waste in our company.
Human factor is the most important area when talking about paper waste. In most of the travelers mind they will think that since they pay for the hotel, they can maximally use all the service in their room and all the facility provided. Through this program we can control this from happening. From the plan, we can compete with other five star hotels that have the same goal in becoming more environments friendly besides attracting common business travelers. On the other hand, it will increase our profit by reducing the amount needed to pay for the material made form paper that can only be used once which has the less chance of being reused once used. The extra money save can be used to decorate and even upgrade our hotel, to make it more special or increase the amount of entertainment in our hotel. Not only that, we can also save our money in doing promotion where some reporters are interested in this program that we are going to launch if you agree.
If this plan can be carry out successfully, we can reduce the chopping of tree plus protecting nature and our precious earth.

2. Introduction of Etap Hotel
Etap hotel is a European chain of basic-service budget hotels owned by the Accor Group. Etap hotel offers you imaginative, comfortable and affordable accommodation. Therefore, many hotel throws away waste matter which can be recycled and used again but these hotels can continue to improve the sorting and recycling of the waste they generate. The need for more sustainable practices and developed a set of ecological, business smart solutions as include energy, water and natural resource conservation, increasing recycling and encouraging the use of sustainable materials and alternative energy sources. This hotel will also provide by a concept of using renewable energy sources like solar or wind energy and energy-efficient lighting. Moreover, this hotel will offer a fresh-air exchange system and on-site transportation with green vehicles. Although that, gray water recycling, which is the reuse of kitchen, laundry water for garden, landscaping and newspaper recycling program also being provided by these hotel.

3. Concept of Green Plan that introduced by Etap Hotel

Besides that, the Etap hotel planned a cocoon concept which is a unique experience in the budget hotel segment that provide for the public areas. The Etap Hotel cocoon concept has been rolled out in all newly built hotels and adapted for renovation projects. It will gradually be deployed in other hotels, with the goal of covering the entire network by 2013. The new Etap Hotel cocoon concept for the lastest- generation rooms and public areas is deployed on new construction and renovation projects throughout the network which is on 2013, the entire network will have been renovated.

Designed in cooperation with Priestmangoode, an agency specialized in affordable, ergonomic design solutions; the Etap Hotel cocoon concept was recognized in November 2008 at the European Hotel Design Awards, where it received the Best Interior Design prize. Although that, Etap hotel also won an award-winning concept on Best Interior Design at the European Design Awards in 2008. In July 2009, Etap Hotel was awarded the “Janus du Commerce”, an official design label attributed by the French Design Institute, in recognition of the new Etap Hotel concept’s commitment to better living.

Not only than that, Etap hotel also tried to introduce a new cosy, highly affordable concept for rooms and public areas, with the goal of providing customers with the best low cost product in the industry. In addition, a new generation of modern style rooms is designed to provide flexibility, flow and well-being. The atmosphere is distinctly cozy, with soft, relaxing colors and a new, enhanced approach to light, space and materials.

On the other hand, Etap is a part of Accor family under their budget brands. Accor is a French hotel group which is a part of the French stock market index operates over 91 countries worldwide. Accor has installed in most hotels recycling bins such as aluminium, plastic, glass and paper and a waste separation container. Organic waste is used in a compost programme or for other appropriate applications. Accor have also installed cardboard compactors which facilitate storage and allow a reduction in the number of trucks necessary for collection to every hotel. All these kind methods will be a reference for our Etap Hotel.

Because of the green plans are keeping introduce, volume of waste will be increased too. Definitely, we need to handle those wastes well, especially paper waste. Because of the green concept, we need to do more detail in our each plan. To improve our organization to have a better well-known, we need the recognition from the society, therefore, we must go through those green-eco plans carefully and detail.

4. Purpose to create a controlling paper waste program

Why to environmental protection? If you travel a bit and stay in hotels you will have for sure noticed that most hotels around the world seem to have become environment aware. Global waste produce has increased. Trash and recycling centre more and more saturated. Reduce the influence of the activity, the product packaging and mainly seldom use less toxic environment at the end of their life cycle. Waste is a huge expense for a hotel can reduce and avoid wastefully-packaged greatly by recycling products.

If rubbish increasing every day, and soon we social corner are rubbish. In the paper the process, will be a lot of sewage, use a lot of wood, so the paper is made from trees, cause trees forest resources waste, serious word will damage the earth the ecological balance. Every day there are millions kilograms more waste produce, which occupies a large proportion of waste paper. At most Etap hotels, waste is created at upwards of 1 kg per guest per night.

In recent years papermaking energy consumption is more and more big, and waste paper recycling of, can save resources, so as to protect the environment play a very active and effective role. In addition, it also can reduce production cost of paper, save the government used to dealing with trash spending, is fully staffed.

Why Etap hotel to create green hotel? Because the Etap hotel every day of resource usage too much, so want plans environmental protection. Green hotel is inevitable trends in the development of hotel, in people green consciousness constantly improve, under the premise of people go out to travel outside except entertainment, but also pay attention to the health of the body, at the same time it also marked the class of the hotel and grade.

5. Current Issues that us facing

Since, the hotel industry is the major energy consumers, the consumption of energy includes paper usage, electricity, water usage, etc. is absolutely super high number. The investigation data display, a Etap hotel, a year to produce several tons of waste paper. Especially toilet paper roll, Etap hotel around the world consumed every year hundreds of millions of dollars. Recycling a ton of waste paper can cut less 17 big tree, production 800 kilograms of recycled paper, reduce 35% of the water pollution, save more than half of paper making energy.

Etap hotel staff, most of the times they don't even appear to recycle anything, because they all the recycle are using is a single trash bin can provide, such as: the do and don’t recycle waste paper. Because of employees’ low environmental awareness and knowledge about recycle, this will cause serious environmental pollution, and a lot of negative effects.

Wastes become accumulated after daily collection; our hotel didn’t make an order of collection waste to recycle or dispose by daily. So, it caused lot of paper wastes stored in waste storage. In order to accumulation garbage, cause local environment will gradually decrease.

Almost any Etap hotel will have a large number of tourist brochures, as long as the customers interest on the cover, such as: the discount, promotion, etc. Each Etap hotel tourism brochures is different, so will cause a lot of waste paper one of the reasons. And each to a time, every tourist brochures will follow change. The waste is inevitable, but there is a way to reduce to lowest. In order to meet the dosage of the hotel, the overall amount the possibility of waste put forward close attention.

From the past research, I found that there is a big paper usage volume in the process communication between staffs and guests. Normally, booking form, application form, confirmation letter, procedure documents, all those documents are used by paper to communicate. Lastly, it brought a high expense to our hotel in accumulated period. Besides that, there are fewer guidelines for our employees to precede the recycling process and fewer of signs to inform and improve customer’s environmentally and recycling awareness.

A strong motivation for hotels environmental protection is sustainable enterprise active competitive advantage can be achieved. Although the competition advantage is seen as necessary, it must be pointed out that rapid change of the macroeconomic environment conditions, competitive advantage won't last long. In addition, get sustainable competitive advantage in the hotel industry is difficult, because hyper-competition exists. In this case, the Etap hotel is very close observation to competitors, and immediately they refer a successful strategy, as the secret of success in the reference. However, competition advantage can't depend on a single improvement. It requires the continuous mass ascension Etap hotel strategic position. Therefore, through the sustainable competitive advantage, can realize more strong rivals, and can be innovative environmental protection, reduce the pollution of the environment impression. In addition, a good environment can be a positive factor and create positive differentiation, the Etap hotel's brand image.

6. Goals and plans that we should have in our program

Everything that we throw away because we don’t want it anymore, or because we can’t use it anymore, becomes waste – the leftovers from our production and our consumption. Waste is one of several sources of today’s environmental problems. The hotel industry forms a large part of the tourism industry and if not managed properly, it has the potential to be detrimental to the social and natural environments within which it functions. Hotels are also resource intensive and in order to reduce their impact, it is imperative to go "green!"

When developing a program, it is important to have a clear understanding of the agency’s policies and goals from the outset. There are many types of goals – some are short term, others are medium to long term, some have a clear direction to achieve them, others may have a more torturous path, and some are naturally easier than others to achieve. Not only that, we may aim to financial goals which related to the expected internal financial performance of the organization or strategic goals which related to the performance of the film relative to factors in its external environment.

As an in-charge person of this controlling paper waste program in Etap Hotel which is Accor Group Brand, I will set paper waste reduction policies and goals. Policy is needed in the paper waste controlling program. A paper waste policy is built on three basic principles, which are using less paper, recycling paper and buying environmentally preferable paper. Paper waste reduction policies reflect the visions and priorities of the department. Policies should be drafted early in the process of implementing a paper waste reduction program and then formally adopted by the agency. Formal adoption demonstrates support and commitment. Once adopted, standard operating procedures, new employee orientations, and other training programs should include the paper waste reduction policies. Paper waste reduction goals should be adopted as part of the policies of the agency. Setting realistic and measurable goals will ensure success.
6.1 Goals Settings
According from data, only 10% of paper waste products are recycled in the world. The possibilities for progress are substantial. Accor which is a Group Brand of Etap Hotel is experimenting different processes in its facilities to recover more waste and increase the recycling segments. In 2012, a brand new year, our organization will set objectives for this paper waste control program.
Goals :-
1. Be the first big-chain hotel which highly involve in paper recycling part in the worldwide
2. Recycling paper and cardboard in 70% of owned and leased hotels
3. At least reach 70% of our hotels recycled paper and carton packaging
4. At least reach 65% of our hotels recycled papers, newspapers and magazines After set goals and policies, planning is needed to succeed those goals and objectives. To cover all the important aspects, paper waste experts and advisory committee are needed involve into the planning process. The purpose of the advisory committee is to guide the overall planning process and to give input to the paper waste management plan on important issues. To build up a strong planning step, working group also needs into in charge of the entire practical work of preparing analyses of the existing situation, identifying current problems and collecting data.
6.2 Ways will proceed in this paper waste recycle program
6.2.1 Paper for procedure, communication, information to customer In the reception desk or some places like office, try to use email to communicate with customers and clients, avoid using paper printing and try to reuse what we can. When customers arrived our hotel, they need to fill out some application forms, we may try to use automatic check-in machine to avoid using papers for application. Tourists that formed by a group, they just need to provide the leader’s passport photocopy to the reception desk.
A purchasing policy can avoid purchase paper that made from 100 percent virgin pulp and use paper with virgin fiber content, be sure the virgin fiber comes from sustainably managed forests.

6.2.2 Paper roll, tissue, tray liner and packaging paper In the process of customers check-in with receptionist, our employees should kindly inform customers that hotel will just provided each room a roll of toilet paper per day; there will be a surcharge for requested.
Besides that, we owned our warehouse in anywhere, so that we may interest a machine that shreds paper and then converts the paper waste into readily useable toilet paper. Because our toilet paper usages are big volume enough for whole hotel’s supply, it costs a lot for those toilet papers. This advanced technology will provide us a big convenience and it is fully automatic.
Tissue will always provide in our restaurant, and it will be free of charge for customer. I will suggest that partner some paper mill factories and recycle used paper or packaging paper into our Etap napkins. Not only from the tissue part, will tablecloths normally put on those tables for customer having meals. For the purpose of avoiding using lot of tablecloths, we may change to produce tray liner from recycled paper waste. Tray liner can be easily to dispose after customer using it during meal.
Etap Hotel always provides some necessity products in those rooms. Those products may use lot of packaging paper, such as toothbrush, shampoo, bath gel, conditioner, body lotion, soap, etc. I suggest that we can use new design cheap recycle paper packaging hotel amenities set.

6.2.3 Recycle bins, signs and brochure
In the recycling more part, hotel should distribute recycling bins for paper and others to every place and every floor and make sure the cleaning crew knows what they are for. To ensure guests and staffs highly to use those recycle bins, signs must be put on conspicuous place and centralized areas; informed them that have recycle bins around them to encourage guests to reuse and recycle. Besides that, posts some our hotel participated environmentally activities photos and issues on the lobby bulletin board. To ensure the secure problem, those recycling bins should be fire proof and they should not obstruct fire exits. Brochure always will be provided on the lobby for guests and visitors. There is big volume of paper usage for brochure within one year. Therefore, I encourage using touch-screen information machine and putting them on the lobby floor. So that, people can easily find out their destinations, maps, vacation points, kinds of vacation information they need. It will save lot of paper for those paper printing brochures.

6.2.4 Education program for staff and collecting paper waste process
Proper employee education is crucial to the success of Etap Hotel’s recycling program. Education should start before our paper waste recycling program. Explain how recyclables are collected, what is recyclable, how the program will benefit the environment and the company, as well as other waste reduction and reuse measures that will be implemented. Educating employees on what can and cannot be recycled is mainly important, such as do recycle for newspaper, magazines, envelops and folders; do not recycle for paper cups, wax paper, napkins, tissue paper towel, etc. If they can separate each type of waste, those separated materials can have a higher market value.
From data which collected, it showed that our organization do not have a regular paper waste dealer and those dealers are not collected paper waste every day. Pick-up arrangement should be made on the day to avoid undesirable storage of bales of paper waste. And make sure, those waste paper could recycle and remake as new environmental paper.
6.2.5 Form paper waste reduction team and coordinator There is a necessary to designate a paper waste reduction team and coordinator. A paper waste reduction coordinator which is enthusiastic about recycling and the environment can easily start, oversee, and maintain program and the coordinator should be appointed by the management to ensure the policies and goals of the organization are met. Paper waste reduction team of staff should be generally from every location and designated to assist the coordinator in implementing and maintaining this program. After that, the paper waste reduction team should follow an action plan which set in the policies and achieve each established goal.
To make sure this program is sustainable; we need to be comprehensive in scope to improve the organization’s overall environmental performance. A comprehensive program incorporates paper waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and recycled-content product procurement into everyday business. We also need to secure upper management support; successful paper waste reduction requires commitment and support from both the upper management and staff level employees.

6.2.6 Monitoring program and getting feedback to management department
Once our hotel’s recycling program is in place, monitor its progress to evaluate cost-effectiveness, employee participation and environmental impact. To discuss the success, progress and problems of our hotel’s program with guests and employees, we may :
1. Calculate disposal cost savings based on the decrease of paper waste
2. Survey employees, guests and departments to identify program problems and improvements
3. Get involved in local recycling and environmental
4. Distribute press releases on our green hotel’s program and accomplishments
5. Use company-wide e-mails to distribute updates or milestones about the program

7. Conclusion I ensure that if we can control the paper waste in our company nicely, it can increase our profit thus bring our name in the top ten among the world. When our company success to decrease paper waste percentage our hotel will become more famous too thus increase the population of visitors visiting our hotel. Moreover, our company not only can attract common business travelers, our hotel can also be visited by families for their vacation, couple for their honeymoon and most important that we can attract more travelers who love to go green and is interested in our tiny workshop on teaching them on how to go green too. In my opinion I highly hope that this plan can work as too all the benefits listed earlier in this proposal. Your consideration is mostly and highly appreciated.

    | Did you know the Government...The Government has many pieces of legislation designed to protect the environment, companies are required to abide by these. One such piece of legislation is the ‘Waste Reduction and Recycling Bill 2011’, it sets out guidelines to help reduce the amount of waste produced and recover resources where possible. The bill sets out the preferred order in which waste and resource management options should be considered: 1. REDUCE and AVOID unnecessary resource consumption and waste generation; 2. RE-USE waste resources without further manufacturing; 3. RECYCLE waste resources to make the same or different products; 4. RECOVER waste resources, including the recovery of energy; 5. TREAT waste before disposal, including reducing the hazardous nature of waste; 6. DISPOSE of waste only if there is no viable alternative. It’s interesting to note that the last option should always be disposal and that there are many options available to us all to avoid that option and minimize waste.A Macville Success StoryRecently Macville conducted an audit of our resource usage and uncovered some home truths that were less than satisfactory. So we decided to make a change for the better and set ourselves some challenges to turn things around. One area that we focused on was our need to print, and we wanted to reduce this to save on paper, toner and servicing of the printers and copiers. We set the challenge to reduce our printing by 20% over a 2 month period. This was no easy feat, and in order to achieve this, we had to re-think the way we did business. With new procedures in place at the end of the first two months all costs were down. Our monthly paper consumption went from 599 reams to 479, reducing costs by $477.60. Toner costs dropped from $686 to 548.80 and cost of…

As humanity develops new technology, the magnitude and severity of waste increases. When computers were developed, it widely was believed that the need for paper would be eliminated. On the contrary this was widely proven false and we are now utilizing more paper than ever. Canada is not an exception as the typical Canadian generates an average of three pounds of solid waste each day1. This alone shows what a careless species we have become- using and disposing materials without even considering the damage we are causing. With half a trillion tones of waste around the world, only 25% may be reused for a second or third time and less than 5% can be renewed limitlessly1. These facts are true only in developed countries. Since these traditional…
