Thesis Statement You can write several different thesis statements about the same topic. Your purpose will help determine your main point and may even help you shape the organisation of your essay. Below is a list of several different thesis statements on “heating costs”. Each serves a different purpose.

Purpose To analyse To explain a cause To contrast To explain an effect To explain a process To offer a solution To classify To explain advantages To explain disadvantages

Thesis A home energy audit revealed that we can reduce home heating costs by $500 a year. Our home heating costs were high because of poor insulation, drafty windows, and an inefficient furnace. Homes using passive solar energy have lower heating bills than others. Higher heating costs have made architects design more energy-efficient homes. Lowering home heating costs is easy if one follows three basic steps. People who own older homes should have an energy audit to find ways to reduce heating costs. Heating costs can be reduced by using fossil-fuel alternatives: solar, wind and geothermal. Reducing heating costs not only saves money, but it also increases the value of a home and helps the environment. Installing solar panels will help reduce heating costs, but they are unsightly and expensive.

If you have ever worked in an office with computers, your computer was probably connected to a network. In a network, there is one main computer to which all the other computers send and receive information. If that base computer shuts down, all the other computers shut down—everything centers on that one computer. In the same way, every word, sentence, and paragraph in an essay must relate to or center on the thesis statement. A thesis statement concisely informs readers of your intention in writing the paper.…

According to reports from the Department of Energy, energy consumption in the average home could be slashed by 60% through the use of conservation methods and investment in new products to improve the efficiency of consumption. Toward this end, DOE (1980) survey results show some sort of conservation-related equipment or insulating material was added to 50% of the housing units eligible for Federal energy tax credits in 1977-78. Homeowners in 1980 claimed tax credits on an estimated $4 billion worth of investments in energy saving products primarily related to home heating. Analysts suggest that this investment rate could reach the $30 billion level per year by 1990 (Business Week 1981). As the result of consumer efforts from 1973-1980, DOE estimates that energy consumption per household has been reduced an average of 12: (Forbes 1982).…
