Essay On Service Learning
I decided to take this class due to the service aspect of the course. I came from a high school in the Philadelphia suburbs that encouraged service to the community. Students were required to log service hours by themselves and during school service days. During my time in high school, I had logged over 300 hours of community service both locally and through the class sponsored trip to the Dominican Republic.
One of my favorite locations that I served was a senior assisted living community that we visited once a year. As a senior in college, I look back at my last four years and realize that I have done little to serve my community at school or at home. I see this course as an opportunity to give back and do something that I enjoy during my final year at Michigan. On a personal level, my grandpa passed away last January, and I saw the joy that came from having young company around him even if it was just watching TV or listening to others talk. The presence of family made him extremely happy. Many elderly people are not as fortunate to be surrounded by family or good company, so I am hoping that my service can bring some happiness.
In my experience, service

Service learning leaves a more positive social impact on the individuals involved and the community compared to traditional volunteering. For example, let’s consider the act of cleaning up a park as community service. In traditional volunteering, a group will arrive, work for a few hours picking up trash, and then leave. In service learning, the group will do the same, but after the work is done, they will meet and discuss. The benefit that comes from discussing could spark new ideas about how to improve the community and create a lasting change in the park. The critical service learning programs help students see themselves as agents of social change to respond to injustice in the community (Mitchell, 2008, p.

Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The following unit, which I titled the “Changemaker Unit,” is the result of this process.…

I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.…

Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning. Service Learning is often confused with volunteering and communication services. Both activities are a form of service within a community and they do not necessarily include a structured educational connection for participants, which is a foundation of all service-learning projects. . Volunteerism is the reliance of volunteers working towards helping a specific social,…

My service learning project was Octoberfest. I helped set up the group’s table prior to Octoberfest starting. I restocked the candy as it was needed. I managed one of the games we had which was Boo’s bowling. One of my group members and I set up the bowling pins each time the kids knocked them down. It happened every two or three minutes. The game was a huge success with the kids, they loved it! They could not get enough of it, and some kids wanted to go more than once after they knocked down the pins. That is not the only game we had. We also had a game where the kids would guess how many eyeballs were in a jar. If they got near the right answer or got the right answer, then they received a furry prize. The last game we offered was the picture square. This is a game where the kids would come and sit in one of the group member’s lap, and get their picture taken with…

Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community. As a teaching methodology, it falls under the philosophy of experiential education. More specifically, it integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good. Service learning is also a method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.…

To some, this may seem to be just one of those topics they usually see in classes. But for me, it can make a difference in a person. It can change someone who’s all about work, money or fame into someone who could provide love and care for their families. I also believe that this course could change someone with no care for the community into someone that could have tremendous contributions to society.…

Service learning is something that happens in schools, universities, community-based organizations, and faith-based organizations. It takes place in classrooms, groups and with entire schools. It is necessary because it improves education, public safety and the environment, but most importantly it builds character and makes students more active. For example, cleaning up after a natural disaster, as in; tornadoes, floods, forest fires and hurricanes helps with public safety and with the environment. Plus those participating should know that community members, students and educators are there to help them with concerns that might come up, for their needs and to give and encourage hopes for the community. With all of this, service learning is there for humans to enrich their learning experiences, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen the community (National Service Learning).…

Community immersion is a version of service learning that is more integrated with a student’s passions and interests, is longer-term and is related to the on-going development of community and social justice issues. Whereas pulling debris from a river would be classified as community service, at EUACS an explicit educational component – such as studying the causes of river pollution and how to advocate for environmental policy reform – makes it community immersion learning. Community immersion learning fulfills many of the school’s goals for students – becoming involved citizens, learning through worthwhile tasks, and developing leadership, advocacy and problem-solving skills. It also provides another avenue for students to discover new interests and meet potential LTI Mentors.…
