Essay On Mental Illness In The Workplace
Having a mental illness does not mean that someone cannot do the job that they were hired for. Most places of work will be discriminative of those that struggle with missing work, not being able to finish tasks, and unable to put on a smile for the rude customer while at work, because of their mental illness. When starting a new job one of the biggest things someone with a mental illness has to overcome at first is whether or not to tell their employer about their illness. The reason for this is because they are afraid of the discrimination that can be pushed onto them (Collings, Sunny page 145). Will the employer understand if they miss work a bit because of mental health days or doctor visits? Maybe they will stop giving the employee as …show more content…
It does not help with developing personal skills, vocational and educational trajectories, or everyday tasks (Fossey, Ellie page 63). Mental illness health is continuing to be under-represented in many workplaces. One of the ways to help overcome these barriers is to have supportive and non-discriminatory workplaces. Meaning that in order to be supportive they should include good communication, value the individual instead of their label, have everyone be able to make a connection in order for the day to go smoothly, and normalize the work place (Fossey, Ellie page 64). A social form is a business that aims to provide supportive and accessible workplaces for people with disabilities where they are away from forms of disadvantages that can arise from working alongside other employees in a main stream workplace (Fossey, Ellie page 64). Those working in a social firm have business goals and principles that they try to follow. They have around 25-50% of employees that have some kind of psychiatric disability; they make sure that the working conditions are fair and integrated, and make sure that worker support is always available because it is always needed (Fossey, Ellie page
