Abortion is the act of ending an unwanted pregnancy. In America, it is legal for a woman to remove the fetus from her womb if it is unwanted. Abortion should stay legal because it is the woman’s right to decide what to do with their body. There might be medical purposes for a woman wanting to abort their unborn baby and also, keeping abortion legal reduces unsafe abortion. First of all, a woman’s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right guaranteed by the US Constitution. The government should not have the right to decide what the woman can or cannot do with her body. For example, doctors do not tell you what to do with your body without your consent, they only suggest what to do and they inform you of the consequences. Some pregnancies can have complications like disorders while developing. Some disorders that the baby could have is anencephaly which is a disorder where the brain is missing. Another disorder that the baby could have is limb-body wall complex which is a disorder where organs grow outside the body. It is the woman’s right to decide if they want their baby to come to this world to suffer with those disorders or not. Furthermore, keeping abortion legal reduces the risk of death on having an unsafe abortion. According to history, in 1972 there were 39 maternal deaths from illegal abortions. Women would try to abort their baby by using coat hangers, knitting needles, or radiator flush. These were unsafe and harmful ways to abort unwanted babies. By keeping abortion legal, these unsafe ways of abortion would not be practiced and women would not be risking their lives.
