Converse College According to Forbes, Converse College is the 4th highest ranked college in South Carolina in list of America’s Best Colleges. (Converse) Converse, a private school for women is located in the heart of Spartanburg, South Carolina. Students at Converse develop their education through a liberal arts curriculum and hold a firm understanding of prestige, honor, and tradition. Converse College has a strong foundation in its history as well as its present day status of education and student involvement. Converse was started upon the principle that "the well-being of any country depends much upon the culture of her women". (Hobsons) Converse was established in 1889 and was among the first fifteen women’s colleges that were founded in the United States. (Hobsons) Dexter Edgar Converse served as the head board of directors and was interested in forming a college for women because his daughter was getting ready to start college and he wanted her to have every possible educational benefit. The college’s main building was burned down by a fire on January 2, 1892 but was rebuilt and expanded. In 1896 Converse was unified under the board of trustees in South Carolina and was established as a college for women to get an education. (Converse) The college had eight presidents prior to current president, Elizabeth A. Fleming. The college has grown tremendously in it’s 123 years to many academic programs which truly give students the possibility of realizing Dexter Converse’s dream. The School of Art, School of Humanities & Science and School of Education & Graduate studies are the three departments of study at Converse College. Students at Converse can declare a major from thirty five possible choices in the undergraduate catalog. Among these 35 majors, the most popular major at Converse College is Psychology (South Carolina.) Students have the option of taking their classes at the school or
