Summary of News Article :
“ Scientists count whales from space ”

Scientist first proves that high-resolution picture from satellite and image-processing software are able to count the number of whales automatically. It is a new approach to detect population of creatures compared to previous methods from a ship or a plane. Its method also extends the possibility to count total population. It can be applied to future tracking of those populations. The research team located on the Peninsula Valdes as a test area found 55 probable whales, 23 possible whales, and 13 sub-surface ones from a combination of the very hi-res panchromatic view and a narrow band of wavelengths in the violet part of the light spectrum. They can also trace the journey of some species that are in risk of extinction, like Southern right whales. The director of research said that they would be able to monitor many species, but they would not know their heath status not. According to Prof Vicky Rowntree from the University of Utah, Satellite data would reduce the risk of bird killed by marine mammal researchers when they are flying to survey whales.
I believe that even though there are limitations to count creatures, for example, on rough seas or murky waters this method analyzing pictures from satellites would be powerful tools for scientist in the future. It is not that they improved the old technique but that they made a new technique with huge potential abilities. In my opinion, we have two possibilities in the future. First of all, if this technique can be used on other animals, such as lions and deer in wildlife, we would know the current number of those populations and be able to understand the balance of nature and control the nature in a good way. There is also another possibility. If we can monitor one species’ journey, we would also obtain their species’ speed and calculate how they

In the Schnabel method of estimating number of animals, the number of recaptures has been assumed to follow a Poisson distribution. This approximation is useful in testing differences in population levels when the Schnabel method is used for estimation, since the distribution of recaptures from one population, conditional on the total number of recaptures from both populations, is approximately binomial with parameters n and p, where p is a function of the parameters of the two Poisson distributions. Tests based on this conditional binomial distribution are described. Confidence limits of the population numbers have been considered and a stop rule developed for the Schnabel experiment used at the second stage of a paired comparison. Mark and recapture is a method commonly used in ecology to estimate an animal population's size. A portion of the population is captured, marked, and released. Later, another portion is captured and the number of marked individuals within the sample is counted. Since the number of marked individuals within the second sample should be proportional to the number of marked individuals in the whole population, an estimate of the total population size can be obtained by dividing the number of marked individuals by the proportion of marked individuals in the second sample. The method is most useful when it is not practical to count all of the individuals in the population. Other names for this method, or closely related methods, include capture-recapture, capture-mark-recapture, mark-recapture, sight-resight, mark-release-recapture, multiple systems estimation, band recovery, the Petersen method, and the Lincoln method. Population size can be estimated from as few as two visits to the study area. Commonly, more than two visits are made, particularly if estimates of survival or movement are desired. Regardless of the total number of visits, the researcher simply records the date…

In the class there are 41 fluent English-speaking students and 23 ELL students. The ELL students are divided between ESOL levels 3-5. Mr. Rodriguez does not assign special seats assignments for the ELL learners; however, he suggests they sit with a battle-buddy. The battle-buddy can either be a student that speaks fluent English or has more experience in the program. The teacher’s desk is situated behind the students and all the student sit in rows. It is your typical teacher centered classroom, although Mr. Rodriquez never sits at his desk. He is constantly at the front of the class or walking around room. As for materials, Mr. Rodriguez has textbooks, leadership student handout booklets, video/audio, and the word wall. Since the materials…

It is a struggle to adapt to a new culture and language, which may be completely different from the ones young child may have already learned. This can lead to inner conflict, confusion, and even anger. One way to handle the conflict is to cut ties with the first culture including language. But is this the answer? Doing so can create a sense of loss. In the essay “Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood”, Richard Rodriguez shares his personal experience with learning English as a second language. In his linguistic journey, the author feels a disconnect between Spanish, the language used at home by his Mexican immigrant parents, and English, the language used in the public world. He raises an important question…

In a recent San Francisco Chronicle article, by Peter Fimrite, it was reported that the California Condor population is being replenished, and once again these majestic birds are roaming the California landscape. Last month five condors were spotted at the Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, just east of San Jose California. As stated in the article “It is the second time since condors were reintroduced into the wild after nearly going extinct that the enormous carrion-eating birds have been tracked into the Diablo Range” (Fimrite). In nineteen eighty seven the birds were almost extinct, there were only twenty two remaining in the world, thus began the repopulation by biologists of the California Condor. Even though the Condor population is being replenished in the wild, there are still dangers to their existence such as lead poisoning and the trash ingestion. Luckily the biologists in charge of the repopulation project have attached Global Positioning System tracking devices on about half of the birds, radio frequency tracking on the rest. Being able to track the animal’s means that they can scout the areas the birds are visiting for potential hazards.…

I will briefly discuss how the government set out to provide what it saw as the solution to a shocking social problem, and then I will comment on some of what has been said about the barriers many immigrants have to overcome in order to feel socially included, to empower themselves and achieve good integration, and what part ESOL has to play in that.…

Finally I will critically evaluate my own practice by making proposals for improvements with reference to a range of theories, principles and modles of curriculum development relevant to the curriculum. My subject specialism in teaching within the Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS) is ESOL (English to Speakers of Other languages) and the area of curriclum i shall explore in detail withing this assignment is Skills for Life Level Entry 3.…

According to an article published by Stephen Krashen in the NABE, about immersed students taught in English, he states that immersing students on the English program just delay their attainment of English. Also immerse them into the English program can cause them to block their understanding, to refuse their participating, to make them feel frustration. This frustrations at the same time can cause school dropouts.…

My person that I interviewed is very unique besides being a very good teacher. She had received the honor of being selected ‘Teacher of the Year” a few years back here at Perkins County Schools (Grant, NE), so I knew her methods and strategies were tried and true. She has several different hats in our school system with English Language Learner (ELL) being just one part. She was asked to work with/for me in this program with our high school ELL students while I concentrated on Elementary and Middle School. She is in charge of the district’s Speech department which has also had great success. Finally, she is the school’s Spanish teacher, and a very good one. I have had the privilege of sitting in on her classes, collaborating with her and also this interview which gave me some tremendous insight into the Foreign Language (FL)/ELL world. I always jump at the chance to gain more knowledge and insight from her experiences.…

To begin with, through all the writing assignments that I have written so far, I have showed to have the capacity to come out with good ideas. Thinking about possible reasons of the problem, consequences or even solutions to the topic, are all very important as the first step to begin. For instance, while writing assignment number two, I started with questions to make us think how armed guards may not be prepared to work with children, and I listed detailed examples on how its consequences can affect the kids’ welfare. In doing so, it can make the readers think profoundly, and realize that there is more to worry about over its negative consequences. In other words, deeply comprehending the topic helps to increase my and the readers’ critical thinking and develop better viewpoints and conclusions. Having good concepts, motivated me to write well-developed writings.…
