WRITTEN AND SPOKEN ENGLISH Giving effective presentations is one of the essentials when competing in the business world and taking up leadership positions. Yet, I was used to be a shy person, and afraid of public speaking before. I felt extremely nervous when making presentations in front of crowds.
This year, being an Aiesecer member of the external relations team, it helps me to boost up my confidence in speaking English. I was given many opportunities to meet the externals, such as visiting the New World Development Limited. It is the very first time that I met externals from such a big company. At first, I could feel that my voice was trembling when talking with Mr Albert Hui, who is the director of corporate strategy. Fortunately, I feel much better after some warm-up conversations with him.
With these valuable experiences, I gradually become a better public speaker!

Besides, I have registered for a CAR A subject in this semester, which is the Multiethnic Identities and Lives. Mr Dean A. F. Gui’s way of teaching is inspiring. I was not a good writer, and often made many grammatical mistakes. Mr Dean A. F. Gui noticed problems in my style of writing. wI often try to organize my ideas in Chinese and then try to translate it back into English. He told me to ‘think in English’ when I am writing English essays. After taking his suggestions, my writing has a big step of improvement and sounds much more natural than before.

WRITTEN CHINESE AND SPOKEN PUTONGHUA
With a rapid economic development of China, Mandarin has become more important as an international language. As a business student, if I could speak fluent mandarin and presentable written Chinese, then it helps to increase my competitiveness in seeking for jobs. However, it seems that I still have much room for improvements in this area.
In the last semester, I was unable to obtain a good grade in the Advanced

In the poem “Icarus,” Christine Hemp uses literary devices to convey that a father-son relationship can be problematic. Hemp pulls a twist on the original myth, and retells it in Icarus’ point of view. Her version of the myth shows that Icarus wasn’t very fond of his father Daedalus; however Daedalus didn’t realize that Icarus wanted to be free. “bound by the string…for years to untie TO I didn’t know…to return” (#14 and 15 TO 16 and 17) This quote portrays the emotion Icarus feels towards his father by the use of irony. At this point, the reader understands that Icarus had to deal with Daedalus with only the hope of exiting the prison, but once free he longs to be away from his father. Christine Hemp threw a new strand of emotion into the mix by showing that Icarus wanted to be free; as doing so, he caused a catastrophe. “Poor Daedalus, his mouth an O below, his hands outstretched to catch the rain…” (#18 and 19) This excerpt shows diction, which illustrates Daedalus’ innocence with the words ‘poor’ and ‘O below’. Hemp also tried to show the difference between Icarus and Daedalus by using asyndeton. “my clumsiness with figures, father’s calm impatience, cool logic, interminable devising.” (#8 and 9) This shows Icarus’ reasons as to why he doesn’t like Daedalus, and why he tries to be better than his father. Since Daedalus is clueless, he couldn’t prevent Icarus’ death; now the reader can infer that Daedalus will have a life of sorrow and regret, without knowing the truth. Hemp’s use of the devices diction, irony, and asyndeton help the reader further understand the myth in a way the original myth couldn’t.…

The quote “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his conscience” was once said by a man named J.F. Clark. Many situations will be faced by many people, but the bravest ones are the ones who listen to their conscience. It takes real courage to stand up for what’s right and no to support what is wrong. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is great example to help prove this point. J.F. Clark’s idea can help be proven true after one examines two things. After reading To Kill a Mockingbird there are many characters that can help support his idea. Atticus and “Boo” Radley are the two characters that best support the quote presented.…

The importance for polished English remains high on the priority among many firms as a basic requirement. The emphasis for proficiency in the English language starts from school for most, but most adults do not maintain a habit of constantly improving and updating their ability to read and write. Speaking has become a part of our daily lives and our reliance on English has turned it into the first language of many Singaporeans. Our heavy reliance on English gives us an edge when practising it throughout our daily lives. This however comes at the cost of having too much comfort and usually leads to arrogance that stops us from constantly improving and updating our language skills. The habit of good English could not only help with a person's daily life but also with any possible career prospectus. The ability to be more qualified than your competition in terms of articulation gives the everyday working adult an edge towards a better prospectus.…

English is one of the most widely used languages in today's world and has a great impact on a successful career. Due to rapid modernization and westernization, the popularity of the English language has increased. It is internationally used and globally accepted. “English is being recreated every minute of every day, in billions of conversations in every country on earth; in countless books, films, television and radio programs, on the internet—recreated organically: that is, in ways that grow out of its extraordinarily, perhaps incomparably, rich history and flexibility.”(Robert Dessaix, 21/01/2006) English is an integral part of business communication, job opportunities and globalization. Although some say that English is not a commonly used language, statistics prove that increase in business transactions, job opportunities and advancement in globalization are due to the wide influence of the…

The inverted pyramid is a method of organization in which facts are presented in descending order of importance. The writer prioritizes that factual information to be conveyed in the news stories by importance, the most essential pieces of information are offered in the first line, which is called the lead. This usually addresses the five w’s+H (who, what, when, why, where and how). The writer then provides the rest of the information and supporting contextual details in descending order of importance, leaving the least essential material for the very end. This leaves the completed story in the form of an inverted pyramid, with the most important elements or the base of the story on top.…

In China, the rapidly developing economy leads to an increasing demand for talents well-equipped with not only professional skills but also proficient language skills. Since early the 21st century profound and nation-wide reforms have been undertaken in English teaching, for instance, with expansion of English language education into the primary curriculum (Zhao, 2008). In spite of having obtained longer period of language training, yet the learners’ performance is not satisfactory, especially in speaking. In job interviews given by foreign companies, they are too nervous to make a brief self-introduction. Most Chinese overseas students find language is the biggest obstacle that prevents them from getting used to the new environment.…
