English 101 Class Reflection
This is my second year at Winthrop. I transferred from Western Carolina University, and their English 101 class is like this course. It was about perfecting argument style writing, so I feel as though this class will partially feel like a repeat for me. However, we did not focus on learning to read, think, and write critically. I do believe this class will help with all of that, especially with reading. A lot of the time when I read, I feel like I am not understanding or comprehending what the author is saying very well. This could be due to lack of reading in the past several years, but also because of my lack of comprehension and critical reading skills. My concerns for this is class are my essays and our reading assignments. Like mentioned

I believe that Mary Matthews is more reliable because while reading you are given a more detailed first person point of view on the lifestyle and society's personality compared to John Taylor Waldorf that seemed to be very vague and distant first impression of Virginia City. While reading Mary Matthews commentary you are able to relate the personal experiences to a certain extent to today's era and connecting on a level that deeply describes Virginia City at that time.…

When I first read question five and decided that this is the topic I wanted to write about for this particular essay, it made me think about all the different movies I have seen where the main character tragically dies but remains in the in between because they have a certain task they must complete before they can truly be gone and go to heaven. I’ve always found these kinds of movies interesting so I decided I would write my own story. Here it goes!…

This course truly helped my comprehension of specific parts of writing that I had never caught on to before. I feel that I can now express my thoughts much more successfully. In the future, my essay papers will be far more grounded because of the new composition methodologies or strategies learned here. I am more confident about writing effectively in future college classes after taking this class. I’ve learned to use different words, phrases, or statements to use other times that will best suit my style of writing. This semester has been one that was, unquestionably, a learning and educational experience for…

But, in doing so it lead to me spending a considerable amount of time and preparation. Unfortunately, I was caught off guard in the beginning due to me not understanding the complexity of literature and its rhetoric strategies. While looking back at the course syllabus it stated, “students should be able to produce unified, coherent, well-developed essays using standard written English.” (Lamb). However, I had to make a vast adjustment to essentially prepare for the strict requirements of this course. While using my time wisely and critically in many high-stake…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

On January 20th, 2016, my life changed because of my English 100 class. My disgusted feeling for writing had to be retained within my soul because of the everyday morning journals. Two days a week at 5:30am in the morning, I had to write a page or two about a book or subject in class. Painfully difficult to do, I eventually overcame my hate for writing. Journals became breakfast, participation became lunch, and essays were my dinner. My heart and soul went into my writing and in doing so my writing became powerful. I finally realized through “I am Malala”, that your voice on paper has a substantial impact on your audience. The strict grading policy provided through Denny Bozmen-Moss helped the organization and punctuation in my journals and…

My former English professor would always say “find a way 101”, whenever a student found themselves struggling in her class. At first I did not understand why she was so rude to her students, this was until after I graduated high school when I realized I was wrong. She was not rude, she was not mean, she was preparing her students for college level English classes. Reflecting on my past encounter with the toughest teacher at my former high school, I can say I feel prepared for a college level class. Although I may have taken the most rigorous class in high school, that does not mean I am expected to pass without falling short. However, I am certain that I am ready for the challenges that my professor will assign me in the fall.…

My current interests include participating in art, specifically sketching and water-color painting. I also spend my time biking around different areas within Jacksonville. It is a time where I get to appreciate my surroundings and experience some exercise. When taking the course AP English Language and Composition, my qualities include being able to analyze text to find meaning and author’s purpose. It’s useful for understanding the text and help me during my exam; furthermore, I am able to write a proper formal essay with the skills I learned from last year. One of my more enriching experiences occurred during my freshman year of high school. For years, I strove for straight A's, and for years I received them. Over time I constructed a mentality, and underlying self-confidence that I would receive an A no matter what. Due to my over-confidence, I was under the impression that I would not have to put forth much effort; however, near the conclusion of the second semester, I had a B in Pre-AP English 9. Despite my last push to earn a 90% in the class with the concluding assignments of the semester, my grade was finalized lower than I had wished for. It felt as if a five pound ball of lead materialized in the pit of my stomach. This experience, at first, devastated me to the fullest extent, and I…

Coming into the course, I didn’t know what to expect. In my opinion the AP English Language I took Junior year was not up par with the actual AP standards and the teacher was extremely lenient. However, I had some difficulty adjusting but once I became use to the course and workload, my grades improved. I really enjoyed the class and when the AP exam came, I felt prepared and confident. This was a huge difference compared to junior year whereas I had to rely solely on self studying to score a 4.…
