After reading those articles, through my experiences in college, I was able to vividly retrospect my behaviors and results from using or not using technology. When I first joined college, my friends and I had new laptops carrying around to school taking note with them. Due to ban laptop policy in high school, I was so pleased that I got to look at my computer screen and write down what professor said. Sometimes, I stray out from the lecture and spent time doing other unnecessary activity, but I did not think that it was because of my laptop. Even if I don’t have my laptop around me, sometimes I zone out thinking about something else. I believe that regardless of using technology devices, it is my own or students’ responsibility to manage and pay attention in any…

Parents always tell their children that if they use too much technology their brain will turn to mush. Children`s brains won`t quite turn to mush, but there still are lots of effects of using too much technology. Young children and teens should be allowed only one to two hours of screen time per day, while children ages two and under should be allowed no screen time at all. A study has shown that 61% of people have said that 5 or more hours of their day is screen time, while 30% of people have said that 9 or more hours of their day is screen time (Thorpe). As technology greatly grows and advances with the years, this generation and the next to come will certainly be more technologically connected. According to the National Purchase Diary Group, a market research company, 91% of Americans aged 2-17 play video games, and it’s also stated that gaming amongst children aged 2-5 has increased the most. According to Jules Henty-Smith, a primary school teacher and a parent who I personally interviewed, states that iPads and computers are very popular in the classroom, and the device popularities can also be seen on the graph to the left.…

In "Growing Up Digital", the author begins to speak about technology usage in schools', and how it affects the academic growth of students'. According to recent studies, technology usage causes a tendency to procrastinate, a shorter attention span, and a lower quality sleep. For example, a student may begin a homework assignment, but receives a text message so instead of finishing the assignment the student will focus on their cellphone. Thus, the student will end up procrastinating and forget about their work. Also, using cellphones, video games, and laptops were found to be more detrimental to a teens sleep pattern than television. This is due to the overwhelming experience those forms of technology provide to the brain, leading teens to forget important material learned to create room for the gaming experience that is stimulating their brain. Thus, the connection that an overuse of technology can have a negative effect on learning, however, if used properly technology can allow students' excel.…

The internet is a great and expansive place, and that is why sometimes students rather explore it then listen to their teachers. All these sites and apps are taking up the attention of students throughout the world. This is shown in a Canadian study which proves that computers are helping lower the users grade and his or hers classmates as well. The experiment showed that students who were using computers during the lecture had lower grades than those who were using pen and paper. The worst part is that students around the computer user were also affected and they too had lower grades. A professor at NYU said that “screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke.” He teaches Media Studies and was an advocate for the use of technology during class. The tipping point for him was when he realized that the distractions spread. He no longer allows the use of technological devices unless the assignment requires it. He also stated that when technology was removed from the…

People who use technology tend to get distracted by it. At Woodside High School, teachers are always blaming technology for students’ struggle to concentrate. (Richtell, Growing) This is true because students usually get distracted during class using their cellphone or some other electronic device instead of paying attention. A student named Vishal implies that “if it weren’t for the internet, [he’d] focus more on school and be doing better academically. (Richtell, Growing) Vishal also believes students always have to deal with distractions and time wasters, but “computers and cellphones, and the constant stream of stimuli they offer, pose a profound new challenge to focusing and learning.” (Richtell, Growing) If students can’t concentrate due to the distraction of technology then it is clearly affecting the amount of learning they get. A Latin teacher, named Alan Eaton, conveys that “technology has led to a ‘balkanization of their focus and duration of stamina.’” Technology is truly a distraction for those who are always using it and will disadvantage our community in the long…
