COULD ELECTROLYSIS BE USED TO DETERMINE THE COMPARATIVE REACTIVITY OF METALS?
BACKGROUND
Definitions and Uses:
Electrolysis:
Electrolysis is the electrochemical process where a direct current (DC) drives a non-spontaneous chemical reaction, assisting with the process of chemical decomposition. The electrolytic process requires an: 1. 2 Electrodes: An electrical conductor/terminal (usually metallic) through which electric current passes. They drive the electrolytic reaction by completing the circuit between the DC source and the electrolyte.
An electrode In any electrochemical process is referred to either the Cathode and Anode
Cathode: the electrode which becomes positively charged. During the process, negatively charged ions (Anions) move towards the electrode whilst positively charged ions (Cations) move away.
Anode: Electrode which becomes negatively charged. During the process, positively charged ions (Cations) more towards the electrode whilst negatively charged ions (Anions) move away.
[Electrodes for this experiment are firstly copper and secondly galvanized steel]

In this lab we attempted to use electrochemistry to extract metals from ionic compounds in solution. In order to extract a metal from a solution, we had to use electrochemistry. To get the copper out of the solution, we used a battery to get an electric current to go through the solution and cause an electron transfer. Because the copper is a cation and the nickel plates had a negative charge when the electricity was flowing, the copper was attracted to the nickel plates and therefore the copper became neutral. We can conclude that the copper gained 2 electrons because the copper was separated from the copper sulfate solution and then coated one of the nickel…

Ionic substances form when a metal reacts with a non-metal. They contain charged particles called ions. Those ionic substances are broken down by electrolysis. Electrolysis is the breakdown of a substance by electricity, and it only happens in liquids. The liquids that can be electrolyzed are called electrolytes. When said electrolyzed, means that the compounds in solutions are broken down when they conduct electricity. Its necessary the use of electrodes since it conducts the electricity to the solution. The electrodes are needed to be an anode, which receives the negative ions, and the cathode, which receives the positive ions.…

As the group number decreases, reactivity increases. As the period increases, the most reactive is towards the bottom. The alkali metals (Group 1 metals) are identified as the most reactive of all present elements on the periodic table. Seeing as potassium and sodium are both found in group 1, this will suggest that potassium will be the most reactive metal. Additionally, potassium should be more reactive than sodium as its single valence electron is placed more distant from the nucleus than sodium, meaning less energy is needed to remove the valence electron, therefore meaning the reactivity is higher.…

I am going to explain what Ions are including Cations and Anions because it is the background information needed to carry out this investigation. An ion is an atom or molecule which the total number of electrons isn’t equal to the total number of protons giving the atom a positive or negative electrical charge. When an atom is attracted to another atom because it has an unequal number of electrons and protons, the atom is called an Ion. If the atom has more electrons than protons this means that it’s a negatively charged ion or Anion. Different anions include carbonate, fluoride, nitrate and oxide. Cations are particles with a positive charge and are formed when one atom loses electrons whereas anions have particles with a negative charge and are formed when an atom gains electrons. The purpose of these experiments I am going to carry out is to…

Metallic corrosion is an electro-chemical reaction in which the metal combines with a non metal, such as oxygen, to form a metal oxide or other compound. This depends upon the nature of the environment. Different metals have different tendencies to corrode, activity or potential. These potentials can be tabulated and form the electro-chemical series. A more practical approach is the determination of the tendency of certain metals to corrode in a particular electrolyte, such as sea water. This is termed the galvanic series of which the following table is an abridged form. Active or Anodic Magnesium Zinc Mild Steel Wrought Iron Cast Iron Ni-Resist 18.8.3% Molybdenum SS,…

In this process electrons are either absorbed or released. Neutral atoms gain or lose electrons and become charged ions that then pass into the electrolyte. The formation of uncharged atoms from ions is called discharging. When an ion gains or loses enough electrons to become uncharged (neutral) atoms, the newly formed atoms separate from the electrolyte. Positive metal ions like Cu++ deposit onto the cathode in a layer. The terms for this are electroplating electrowinning and electrorefining. When an ion gains or loses electrons without becoming neutral, its electronic charge is altered in the process. In chemistry the loss of electrons is called oxidation while electron gain is called reduction.…

In this experiment, methods to alter rate of electrolysis will be attempted to be discovered. Although many contributing factors could affect the rate of electrolysis which could include internal energy within the electrolyte or surrounding temperature, these factors are hard to be controlled and changed systematically. Voltage supplied to the electrodes however can be easily changed and adjusted. Thus this experiment will attempt to find the relationship between Voltage applied to the electrodes and the rate of electrolysis.…
