For my second cultural activities, i went to eat at a Mexican restaurant called El loro that is located in crystal. They had a lot of options but I decided to try enchiladas de mole which are traditionally made mostly in Mexico. enchilada has been the most popular Mexican dishes for a long time. Even though enchiladas were first introduced 19 centuries they became popular in the 20 the century. Some people have traced back the origin of enchiladas to pre-Columbian culture particularly to the Aztecs. However, this is only partially true because the Aztecs had chili peppers, sauces, and tortillas but there is no evidence suggest that they made anything similar to what Mexicans call enchiladas. Plus, many ingredients that are used to make enchiladas…

The foods in Morelia were home cooked and freshly grown from his garden; such as, beans, corn, and vegetables. Also, he mentioned, that the soda in America was similar in popularity to the “Aguas”, freshly made fruit juice, in Morelia. In terms of food, he enjoyed the American food experience, especially Mediterranean food since it reminded him of his favorite home dish, ceviche, a Southern American dish made of raw fish and spices. However, he disliked the fact that American food was calorically dense compared to Mexican food. In addition, he made a remark that Morelia will slowly increase its obesity rate because of the expansion of fast food restaurants. Aside from food, the scenery of America, specifically Santa Monica, was completely different compared to Morelia. He said, “that the sky was beautiful, the ground was clean, and the streets were organized.” On top of that, he saw the ocean for the first time in which he would spend most of his time exercising, relaxing, and hanging with his new friends that would help him adapt to American…

In the western area of the U.S, the most common Spanish speakers are Mexican, making their food the most prevalent. This has created a disconnect in the minds of the residents because they automatically assume any Spanish person or Latin food they come across is automatically from Mexico. In reality, Mexican food is uniquely known for its heavy use of spice and the main ingredient in their dishes, is corn. Even the candy is coated in a layer of chili. In an article with detailed facts about Mexico it is stated “Mexican candy is not only a piece of Mexican food, but also a piece of Mexican art. The “Calaveras de Azúcar”, or sugar skulls, are specially prepared for the Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead” (Mexican Food 7).
