El Dorado County Needs Assessment
El Dorado County is located in the historic Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and foothills in California. It is a small rural county encompassing just 1,788 sq. miles of beautiful scenery. The largest city in the County, the City of South Lake Tahoe, provides the county with a reliable source of revenue during the winter months. The revenue is generated from the ski resorts and logging, which skiers from all over the world travel to enjoy. The remainder of the year, apple orchards grow throughout the Eastern part of the county, making apple exports a source of seasonal income.
As of July 2013 the unemployment rate is at 8.4% (Department of Numbers, 2013).
General Demographics Population – Age and Ethnicity. El Dorado is a small-populated rural county consisting of an estimated 180,561 people, which is just a small percentage of the overall population in California of 38,041,430. The percentage of population by age is as follows:

The percentage of residents in California in poverty is 10.3% and children under the age of 17, is 13.4% (United States Department of Agriculture, 2011). In comparison to the entire state, El Dorado’s poverty rate is significantly higher, their total population of people in poverty is 16.6% and children under the age of 17 is 22.8% (United States Department of Agriculture, 2011).
