Ego Integrity
As I move into and through late adulthood, I expect to have a sense of ego integrity. Being satisfied the past decisions I have made; whether it was in the work force, the friends I've kept and made, the way I live my life, the way I have raised my children, and brushed any hardships off my shoulder makes me more likely to have a sense of integrity. The decisions I have made currently and in my virtual past to cope differently with negative experiences are, calling my life long friends, Alex and Sarah, who have always been there for me no matter what the situation was regarding; they always knew what to say. Also, keeping myself busy. For instance, going out for a walk to get some fresh air, doing yoga, and gardening; which I enjoy doing.

    “Ego”. To describe this word, most people would say it is the word that means, “I”. It is the word that makes each person individual. Ayn Rand writes a story called Anthem bringing to life a character named Equality 7-2521 along with his companion Liberty 5-3000. The society they live in believes every person should be equal. “And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone” written in Anthem. In this story, there is no such thing as the word “Ego”. But to Equality 7-2521 there is such a thing.     The definition of integrity is vague and rather open ended. Morals are the premise for all perceptions of integrity and should be further explored to better understand the cloudiness behind integrity. Morals are the standing personal ideas of what basic fibers construct all decisions, right or wrong. But morals are personal, and ever changing, never exactly the same person to person. For example, the Ten Commandments, implemented on primitive people for thousands of years attempted to instill basic morality into barbaric people who, with the fear of a higher power, abided. The late George Carlin summarized these ten into a basic 4. Don't lie, cheat, steal, or kill. Now, in a civilized world, in a country that defines social civility, these 4 seem easy and almost givens. But, in third world countries where life is not easy, and everyday is eat or be eaten, morals are far less important. Millions, everyday, commit all four acts without hesitation. Morals are expendable when survival lies in the balance. Survival, of what? Survival of life, survival of an idea, survival of a relationship? Millions have killed millions because they thought their agenda was more prevalent, or their god justified it, or because they needed to in order to fulfill the instinctual desire to live at all costs.     Of the seven Army Values in my opinion integrity maybe the most important one due to the fact taking full responsibility for their actions at all times don’t matter if it’s good or bad. Doing what’s right, legally and morally at all times when no one is around is what makes us soldiers and leaders. Having integrity shows senior Noncommissioned Officers that they can depend on you no matter what the situation is to solve a problem dealing with other soldiers and their personal issues. Being a Noncommissioned Officer with integrity shows your soldiers they trust you no matter what you tell them and they will listen and not question you. Integrity is something that is instilled in us in the beginning of basic training. As we grow in our military career, we learn that all Army values, including integrity still apply during off-duty hours and when not in uniform. We are Soldiers always; twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. So far in my military career, I have learned that you are never really alone and there is always somebody watching you, even if you do not see them. Integrity is being able to admit when you have made a mistake, being trustworthy and dependable even when the right thing isn’t the easiest or most common thing to do. Integrity is definitely a vital factor in ensuring a successful deployment of any unit. Everyone must trust each other to accomplish the mission and keep each other safe. For example, the Command Sergeant Major has to trust that the Battalion Sergeant Major has the integrity to train and lead his Soldiers to and from combat. Just as the Battalion Sergeant Major has to trust that the Company First Sergeant can do the same at their level. Company First Sergeant trust that their subordinate Platoon Sergeant and section sergeant can accomplish the same mission.…
