Integrity and Courage. Two core values that can be significant in today’s society. These specific core values in the society really prove to be a significant part of all lives that surround us. Between the person’s character and reputation, the person in today’s society without having a good example of both of them will not go far. Where integrity and Courage come into play really represent how a person is seen in the modern society that we are living in today. I would propose for your consideration that a significant characteristic of integrity is consideration of others; have I been just too all people that I have dealt with. The ageless adage of “do unto others” seems to have been pushed by the wayside in a self-centered society where a majority of people wander around totally clueless as to how their behavior impacts others. I believe this thoughtless behavior, focusing solely on self-interests and to heck with everyone else, is the root cause of many of America’s current maladies. Whether we are talking about collapsing stock markets, a National debt that will be unsupportable by the next generation or even highway driving frustrations it comes down to the fact that people are all too often not concerned about how their behavior impacts someone else.

This is where I get to my point of really seeking someone else’s point of view on the subject of integrity. So therefore I interviewed an honest and courageous person here at Rocky Mount Prep. Mrs. Rodriguez, a Spanish teacher at school has seen many things that could represent Integrity at this school. This she pointed out an example of one incident a time near the beginning of the school year. “Towards the beginning of the year, we had a situation that affected a student and someone who put glue on his desk” she explained. “When we finally got the class settled down, I pulled out the group of students who sat in the sounding desks. When brought into the hall I asked them simply if they knew what was going on and who did it” “When I asked, one student came forward and told me who did it.” She explained. “This made me proud that this student had the integrity and the honesty to respond to the situation with honesty” she added. When you have someone like this who does what’s right when really none of his peers were looking, can be a great example of how the person can achieve great courage and integrity. Courage is a strong topic to handle with your character. Note that courage really means “being able to stand up for people who have no voice.” As Mrs. Rodriguez said. Courage has always been needed in the world. The form that the courage takes has evolved over time. In the beginning of the human race, courage was mostly of a physical nature. Each day required courage just to get through it. When a person awakened in the morning, they did not know if they would be killed before the day was over. Courage is the flip side of fear — or, stated in another way, it is the outcome of a positive response to fear. Looking back at the interview I conspired with Mrs. Rodriguez, she had another example of Courage. “I like to think of myself as a courageous person” she pointed out. Responding to her question I asked why you would consider yourself a courageous person. She responded by giving me a short story from her past that stood out justifying her clam. “When I was growing up, you could say my family was poor. When I thought about applying to college, I thought it wasn’t really somewhere that I could strive to go. But I met a guidance counselor and it really hit me that I really can set this goal.” She added. “When I started to apply for college, I had to get scholarships. My family said they could support me, just not financially. That’s where I stepped it up and got into a private 4-year college on a tuition-free scholarship.” She said. Courage is stepping up where no one has gone before. Courage really defines that truth, perseverance, and helps you strive for something you...
