ESE Support System
For this ESE support system, the person I decided to interview is Professor Teresa Paton. Professor Paton is a Professor at Southeastern University that works with students in the Pathway Educational program on Campus for students with disabilities. At the beginning of the interview she asked who knew what ESE stood for? A few students raised their hands explaining that ESE is the abbreviation that stands for exceptional student education. During the interview, Professor Paton was asked a variety of questions that dealt with inquiry, fairness as well as support in a ESE program and the classroom. Professors Paton, way of answering any questions that she believed would’ve been asked. She used the word Collaboration creating an acronym, that gave a detailed description of …show more content…
The two ways that she said are most effective in ESE classroom is visual and verbal communication. Prof. Paton example of using the two different types of communication was she expressed how she wanted me to stop messing with my hair. Using verbal communication, she simply stated that she would like for me to please stop messing with my hair. Prof. Paton also shared that not every student will response to that type of communication. Which prompt her to showing us how to use visual communication. Around her neck, she was wearing a keychain that had little square cards with different action words with a picture describing what the word meant. So, when asking me to stop messing with my hair, she simply flipped to a red card with a stop sign on it that had the word stop on it. By reading the card I knew that she wanted me to stop whatever I was doing without her even having to say anything other then please.     Effective communication can take many forms whether verbal or written. Direct face to face conversation allows information to be quickly passed between professionals, questions can be asked directly and clarity can be gained.     In my current role I ensure that all forms of communication is clear and precise, that it has a purpose, it could be to inform, to instruct, to convince or to serve some other purpose. Communication is said to be successful when the desired objective is attained.     Educators are continently attending workshops or meetings to improve their teaching techniques and skills in the classroom. Incorporating strategies in the classroom can sometimes be a difficult task, but in the end witnessing successful students is more important. One of my main goals as an educator it to make sure I am teaching the content correctly, so it will stick with each and every student. I can achieve this through the use of differentiated instruction. Using a variety of techniques such as visuals, auditory, and kinesthetic learning will help all students to be successful. If an educator presents materials in a variety of ways then it will be more likely that students will be able to catch on to one of the strategies to learn the content better. It is known that an ELL student will be more successful if they are able to learn through visuals. If an educator only teaches through verbal cues then the ELL students will have a harder time interpreting and processing the materials in various lessons. Using all three learning styles will help all my students to learn more effectively, in turn, being more successful. Student collaboration is a great tool to help students learn and to make sure students become comfortable with one another. Students can learn cultural differences through graphic organizers, cooperative learning techniques, and group work.     Communication with cooperating teacher/communication with students throughout the lesson- Both of my cooperating teachers were extremely helpful throughout the whole process. Ahead of time, we discussed potential activities and subject matter. When I explained my activity to them, they gave me suggestions because they had previously done an activity similar to my years before and had many recommendations. They preferred a hard copy of my lesson, so I brought copies in for them to read on the Friday before my lesson was taught. We spent nap time that day going through it and talking over what would happen. After my lesson, my cooperating teacher gave me very positive and useful feedback and even hung the final products on the display board. Communication with the students was a bit more challenging because they are three years old and their minds move faster than their mouths/bodies. I would ask questions regarding the shapes they were finding and the children responded accordingly; however, questions had to be asked several times in order to get a response.
