Two teams of five players must try to destroy each other’s base. That’s it. Sounds simple right? But when XP, gold, CS, wards, lanes, ganks, Barons, dragons, and countless other variables that no doubt make little or no sense to the uninitiated are thrown into the mix, the game morphs from kindergarten math into math so complicated and complex, that even the world’s best mathematicians would struggle. I was drawn in by the simplistic masquerade, and then found myself enthralled by the intricacies and competitiveness of the game. Every facet I discovered in the game was so interesting and unique that I couldn’t look at games in the same light ever again. If I wasn’t playing League of Legends, I was wishing that I was. There wasn’t a day where I didn’t think of it, I found something I truly loved doing. I was content. And to this very day, I still…

In 2001, Daniel Okrent, a former New York Times newspaper editor went on record how he no longer plays the popular game that he created: Fantasy Baseball. Mr. Okrent told USA Today writer Chris Colston that he no longer miss the game, a cultural movement and today a multi-billion dollar industry that has evolved into something far greater than what he ever anticipated it to be back in 1980s. The basic rule of the game is similar to that of fantasy games that are being offered today; create a mock or a virtual team based on sports, fill in your team with professional players that you’ll probably never meet in your life that can get…

When thinking about the effects of video games on America’s youth many negative aspects come immediately to mind such as aggression or attention deficit concerns. Mainly as result of mass media attention given to subjects such as law suits and violent crimes, these negative effects tend to take center stage. Is it possible that there are positive outcomes from the use of video games which are just as valid? Each type of game requires different skills if the player is to be successful; many involve problem solving, fast reflexes, coordination or social skills. Collectively, video games exercise almost all cognitive and social skills used in real life (qtd in Spence 92). While the foremost reason America’s youth participates in the activity of video gaming is purely entertainment, there are many positive skills and mentalities learned from this participation including coordination, spatial recognition, problem solving, teamwork and creativity. The best way to ensure a favorable effect on children from video games is to monitor the quality of the content.…

Video games are becoming a common modern element in today 's society, and while their popularity grows, so does the need to research their psychological effects on the player. Unfortunately, researchers generally focus on the negative effects such as increased aggression, and because of that it can be easy to forget that video games are actually quite beneficial, "First, the overwhelming majority of players describe game play as a positive emotional experience" (Oswald, Prorock, and Murphy 10). Since video games receive such negative stigma from the media, there has been the most research done on the frustration-aggression theory. This theory says that once an individual becomes frustrated, aggression is inevitable (Breuer, Scharkow, and Quandt 3). Research on this matter has shown that this is not always the case due to the fact that frustration, associated with losing, is a common element of a video game. This means that a player more or less just becomes used to this "frustration." In fact Video games provide boosts in emotional and social health. Video games also provide educational benefits such as increased skills in math, science, cooperation, and decision making. Middle-aged and older adults are also turning to casual video games as a way of keeping their brains in the best shape. Americans shouldn 't be so quick to deem video games as nothing but violence causing and time consuming. Instead of causing violent outbreaks, video games give Americans a boost in many different mental areas.…

Not only do videogames help players mentally, but they also build character and strengthen social skills. Many games require the player to work together along with teammates in order to succeed in the game such as games involving tactical squadrons. Teamwork, a skill that comes standard in almost every game, is an important part of social life that is used nearly every day. Furthermore, the fact that many players discuss their game tactics or strategies with others, boost their self confidence and helps them gain friends. The increasing level of difficulty as the game advances, make players set goals and expectations to themselves which often result in them meeting or exceeding their goal which they can later apply to other disciplines. On top of all this, video games stress careful observation and detail to the environment. This skill can easily become a humongous advantage in…
