Papa John’s is a pizza delivery and carryout chain that was founded in 1985 by John Schnatter in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Schnatter had a goal to build a better pizza than that of his competitors by focusing on fresh quality ingredients. This focus on quality lead to the slogan “better ingredients, better pizza.” Today Papa John’s is ranked the third largest retailer of quick service pizza in the world due to great customer service and an offering of quality ingredients. The company typically competes with Pizza Hut, Dominoes, and Little Caesar’s within the pizza market. Papa John’s chose abandoned the traditional pizzeria menu that includes pastas and salads and instead focused on a few items and the quality thereof. The company’s menu consists…

There are a number of bases on which Papa John’s differentiates itself, many of which are interrelated. First and foremost is Papa John’s offering of a higher-quality pizza, which not only allows them to differentiate on the basis of a product feature (i.e. the high quality ingredients used in the pizza), but, even more importantly, on the basis of reputation. While most other pizza chains have their sights set on more of a cost-leader/low-price strategy, and make an less genuine statement of quality, Papa John’s entire organizational culture is focused squarely upon the pursuit of “better ingredients, better pizza”. This commitment has in turn endeared it to customer base, and has resulted in a long string of high customer satisfaction ratings.…

    Papa Johns Study Case

    • 474 Words
    • 2 Pages

It shouldn't have to be shared, but Papa Johns exists pretty strongly within the fast food environment. Power of buyers is high, substitutes are readily available, etc. Now, to explain their current strategy. Papa Johns, through their efforts, have allowed them to rise to having 6% of the market they exist in, but generally still pale in comparison to Pizza Hut and Dominos. However, their strategy that they've picked for themselves seems to be working for their environment. Their strategy being that they promote themselves as a 'premium' pizza, with superior quality and an attention to customer's details. They've also differentiated themselves by having partnerships with larger corporations such as Coca-Cola and their suppliers. This is a key point. By having contracts with their suppliers, such as the quarterly contract with their cheese suppliers, keeping prices stable at all times is a very easy task, while the other pizza places will often have to vary their prices throughout the year. However, one mistake that has been coming up that they don't match the environment, has shown that they have tried placing too many stores too quickly. They've had to shut down several underperforming stores within the past year, which shows that trying to forcefully expand their market share into areas that already have strong brand loyalty with other competitors is not the answer. Their recent partnership to be the pizza sponsor of the Superbowl over the past three years is a correct way. This allows people to get a cheap 'premium' pizza and try and understand it's superiority.…

The first and most important core competency of Papa John’s is their emphasis on providing a superior quality traditional pizza. This core competency has been the foundation of their success and it has helped them enter thriving into the pizza industry, which appeared to be matured and saturated. John Schnatter (founder of Papa Johns) key target was to keep their products “simple, consistent and focused”. By keeping this philosophy of providing a better product, Papa Johns was able to penetrate the pizza industry. Their marketing emphasized more on their superior ingredients and locations as compared to competitors like Pizza Hut who focused more on discounts and reduced-ingredient pizzas. In a lawsuit by Pizza Hut, which challenged Papa Johns’ claim to use superior ingredients, Papa Johns was able to prove in court that their ingredients were superior to Pizza Hut.…

    Dominos Case Analysis

    • 3712 Words
    • 15 Pages

Dominoes was found in 1960 and headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Domino’s Pizza Inc. is the market leader in the United States pizza delivery and second largest pizza company in the world based on number of units. The company offers a wide variety of pizza products as well as pasta, bread sticks, boneless chicken and wings, desserts and soft drinks. As of the beginning of this year, 2012, Domino’s had 394 company-owned stores and 4,513 franchised Domino’s units in the U.S. and 4,835 franchised stores internationally. Domino’s strategy is to use its superior supply-chain to provide its franchises with lost cost inputs so the franchises may focus on sales and service. Through the online world, Domino’s customers began to share their dissatisfaction with Domino’s products, such as pizza lacked taste and quality and poor quality delivery pizzas. Over the past 3-5 years Domino’s has made an effort to improve the palatability of their core products, and in 2009 introduced a new and redesigned crust recipe, fresh ingredients, a new sauce, and real shredded cheese. This effort, along the successive marketing campaigns has increased brand loyalty and customer preferences which has had a profound effect on increases in revenue and number of franchise openings. I believe that this strategy that is currently implemented is working, but for Domino’s to remain an industry leader and prolong the current trend of success, Domino’s needs to focus on the demographic and technological changes in the market. Focusing on the changes and reevaluating their current strategy will help Domino’s remain a leader within the industry.…

Domino’s pizza showed strong financial performance during 2011 which has given the company a significant amount of flexibility and freedom given the increase in revenues, earnings power, strategies for the future and continued growth. However, Domino’s has to decrease customer churn, drive up same- store sales and continually reinforce and strengthen their brand, capitalize on sociocultural shifts occurring in United States, centrally redefine its in store dining strategies, relative to growing online sales. Historically, Domino's Pizza has been a strong player in both the domestic US and international out-ofhome pizza marketplaces. With more than 9,300 locations in 65 countries, Domino's is the number two pizza restaurant behind Pizza Hut and number one in the pizza delivery segment with market share numbers approaching 20 percent. 1 (See Exhibit 1 for a ranking of the top 50 pizzeria brands in 2009 by sales.) In recent years, however, Domino's has come under consumer fire and, although masked by international revenue growth of 13.2 percent for the same period, the company posted a 16.3 percent decrease in domestic revenue from year-end 2005 through year-end 2009. While the economic recession could certainly be blamed at least in part for its lagging financial performance, 2 Domino's knew that this dip was more than just an economic indicator. In fact, the news reaching the executive suite indicated that Domino's was suffering from a negative reputation in the marketplace. Central to consumer complaints was that Domino's served low quality pizza with inferior ingredients that lacked taste. Coupled with the fact that consumers continue to become more and more educated about obesity and diet related health concerns and it was clear-Domino's had to act. To stay…

As stated Pizza Hut’s brand image is neither fast food nor full-service. It delivers average quality products for average prices. Previously, it was marketed as a “more for the same” value proposition (Kotler & Armstrong, 2012).Yet, it has done something that shocked the whole market. It has cut the prices up to 50%. Doing that, Pizza Hut is fully reforming its brand image. They are implementing a “Same for less positioning” (Kotler & Armstrong, 2012). In a commercial, an actress playing a restaurant employee says, “We’ve changed just about everything, except how your favorite pizza tastes” (ELLIOTT, 2010). This move is due to a weakened economy and a drop of customers. But initiating a price change is not riskless. Customer may think that the quality has been reduced and Pizza Hut could lose its loyal customers.…
