Diversity Reflection Paper
In this week’s topic, we were told that we had to interview a classmate and get their perspective on diversity. This was a real interesting topic for me because I usually don’t really care for topics like this because it can become a debatable topic. Diversity to me isn’t one of those things I take very seriously. To be honest if I really look at it, I treat everyone the same regardless of age, religion, color, etc. I have so many different friends that are African American, Caucasian, Asian, old, young, the list goes on and on. But this was a fun topic at the end of the day because I got to learn another classmate’s perspective on the topic. Now going into the interview, I thought that he would have the same viewpoint as I did but I quickly …show more content…
But getting into the interview I quickly learned Nagay’s perspective on diversity is it means “different”. Getting into the role models and heroes in his life he was quick to mention his dad, his little brother, and his best friend as I can relate on the same level except not having a little brother and being the little brother. When I asked him about societal contributions he said “always appreciate the little things in life and that you can always make something out of nothing.” Participating in this interview changed my perspective on diversity a little as it was also interesting to hear someone else’s point of view on the whole situation. I was stuck on one way of thinking, a close-minded approach, but Nagay for sure changed my view on it and I think it was better that he did because I’m not a close-minded person but with that I was. To conclude, this was my favorite assignment of them all. Getting to meet new people is always fun for me and learning someone’s else’s viewpoint on certain topics can certainly be a positive in most cases. If I had to do this assignment again I would in a heartbeat, I had a lot of fun and Nagay is an awesome human

Gender discrimination is quite pervasive in our society. Schools, childcare institutions, family, media, and other societal institutions transmit and preserve stereotypes regarding women and men. In the Western societies, conventional gender traits are frequently related to power – men and their specific activities are classified as influential, public oriented, important, brave, productive, strong, outgoing, and having increased value, social recognition, and monetary rewards. On the other hand, it is widely believed that the main traits of women include; family-oriented, caring, dependent, and passive.…

The information I learned about diversity may not fit into the intended point of the class. Thinking back as far as I can remember the way I related to others was and still is decided on the way the mutual consideration for respect for whatever the purpose for the need to relate. At a point in my life I would have had no problem saying ‘’I Steven Hodges am proud to have a divers mindset in regard to being open to everything, and everyone imaginable under the sun’’. It is unfortunate that the word diversity seems to have been tainted and used like a tool to cloud and impede the accomplishments made, or at least started by people like Martin Luther King JR. The information I have gathered about diversity in the US is that so many people are too worried about other people and how diverse they are; but they them self-need to ask themselves how divers they truly are. I feel that too many people have a sense of entitlement and these same people freely point out the differences of other people who may not share the same opinion as them. Yet if they are so divers why can they not accept that people are different and we all do not have to think and feel the way the next person does.…

Looking at me you might wonder what I could possibly understand about diversity – middle class white male, college educated, married with two children, a boy and a girl. These broad generalizations describe me, but they do not define me; just as similar ones about others are equally uninformative. They note apparent features while failing to capture inherent uniqueness. To me, diversity encompasses respect and acceptance, concepts defined by actions taken to recognize and understand individuality, not simple toleration of obvious differences. Although I do not write articles or participate in protests demanding change, I quietly respect the dignity of individuals and value their perspectives. My service in the United States Army has profoundly shaped my attitudes and guided my actions supporting these beliefs.…

Diversity and race have played a big part of our history and as a society we can learn and grow from this experience. Hispanic and American Latino or Mexican heritage have experienced many hardships during the immigration period to the United States. They originally came here in search of better jobs and housing but found that difficult when trying to gain citizenship. Some have lived here illegally forcing them to be sent back to their homeland. Because of this, many Hispanic people are looked upon as illegal aliens and treated as outsiders.…

After completing my first semester of college, I have found a special drive within myself to do more and more. I was fortunate enough to seek help from individuals who also see the diversity barrier as a problem and ask them to educate me on why this is a problem and how can we as individuals do our part. Being from a city like Los Angeles, where we can find an exhausting amount of different cultures, we would expect to have many different faces in multiple professions. Instead we see the minimal. I attended a conference at the UC Irvine School of Medicine that really opened my eyes to the problems of diversity in medicine. This is a conference that I will forever be grateful that I attended. Here I listened to speakers of similar background…
