Since everyone has to eat something in order to survive it just makes you think about how much sweets you eat. Here are a few things that I do agree with. The studies that the Chicago Tribune included were really interesting not only that but it was helpful to know about these topics. Now these studies were credible because they were done by institutes that had a lot of knowledge on that topic. A study that stood out the most to me was that 71% of Americans get more than the recommended amount of sugar per day (Chicago Tribune, par. 7). This statistic sort of makes you take a step back and see if you are a part of that…
Experts have confirmed what many of us discovered for ourselves over years of trying to keep our bodies at a healthy weight. It’s now understood that one diet doesn’t work for everyone. That’s good to know, but it leaves many of us in a quandary. How can we know what diet will work best for our particular body shape and lifestyle?…
The article “Path to Better Eating Strewn with Traps” by Marcia Clemmitt, talks about how the American diet can have tricks, so people can eat more calories than what they actually think they are eating. It talks about added sugars and about how they are listed on food labels. The article tells what errors people are making when eating or drinking sugar-sweetened beverages. After all, I enjoyed reading the article.…
It is no secret that many people are becoming vegan and changing their lifestyle drastically. From many celebrities to people in our neighborhood. What is veganism? Being vegan means someone does not condone animals being raped and slaughtered against their will. Also someone on a vegan lifestyle does not consume or use anything with animal products or bi-products. When being vegan someone must check all labels to see if something was tested on animals, has animals fat, or anything that harms or hurts an animal they cannot consume or use. The first step to being a vegan is it is pivotal to understand where our products came from and the malicious tasks it takes to get them.…
However, just because a weight loss plan is popular doesn’t mean that it’s for you. So, the question is does the Every Other Day Diet work?…
Overview: Foodborne illnesses are a burden on public health and contribute significantly to the cost of health care. A foodborne outbreak occurs when 2 or more cases of a similar illness result from eating the same food. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of a total of 1,270 foodborne disease outbreaks, which resulted in 27,634 cases of illness and 11 deaths.…
Imagine you’re walking down the sidewalks of Wilmington. You see cars and buses driving by along with adults and children. You notice that there is a little girl, looking rather malnourished, holding a plastic bag full of canned vegetables, peaches, and juice. As she walks by, a paper flutters out of the bag. You pick it up and realize that it’s a flyer for the Food Bank of Delaware. The paper says that they are in need of volunteers to help package food for people in Delaware. You ask yourself, “If I volunteered, could I make a change?” The answer is yes. The Food Bank of Delaware needs volunteers to help package food for people who cannot obtain it. Some may go without food, but with the help of volunteers at the Food Bank of Delaware, more people will have the chance to get the food they need.…
The objective that I chose from the Healthy People 2020 Objectives was to increase the proportion of genetic testing. This is a new objective, having not been included in Healthy People 2010. The genomics discipline is a budding field and it concerns the study of an individual’s genome. Genomics uses knowledge of the molecular source of a disease in order to help predict, treat and quantify the likelihood of disease reoccurrence.…
“Have it your way”, A slogan that I saw one Friday afternoon. I was relaxing, watching television one day when I saw that commercial of one fast food company named Jack in the Box. Upon watching the commercial and knowing all the truths behind these fast food companies, I questioned couple of things that they advertise. After reading the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, I became fully aware that Jack and the Box and any other fast food chains are merely business owners and what do they really have it the consumers way is really a bold and brainwashing statement, but behind what they really wanted is to have it their way – its business and its first agenda is to earn money.…

Today in the world we live in, 25% of white children are overweight and 33% of African American children are overweight. Those numbers are staggering. Also about 45% of all diabetes cases diagnosed in children are as a result of obesity. We all live in a very hectic world, and I realize that. Everyone has somewhere to be, weather it be work or a social event and to be honest, we really don't take care of our kids. It is found more and more that we as a society don't get our children involved. Less and less, do they have the opportunity to enjoy a basketball game because mom and dad don't have the time while they are at work, trying to hold down the mortgage and all the taxes. The PTA's around the country are getting fewer and fewer volunteers because people don't want to get involved. We have stopped wanting to raise our kids, and we pass the job off to a daycare or a nanny. Everyone knows that's no substitute for a parents love. It was said that in a study done, that the number one cause of child obesity was insufficient expenditure of calories through a physical activity'. Soon following was excessive snacking, having a fast food diet, and family behaviors'…
These past few decades have shown drastic changes in how health is perceived. With childhood obesity raising every year this is something that needs to be recognized with a change following it. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period of time (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). These numbers shock me, and with recess and physical activities being removed from school in favor of increased academic studies, this needs to change. My first solution comes in the form of educating the kids in every opportunity possible. Another…
I will be discussing the issue of eating disorders and how they affect nearly eight million people in the U.S. alone. Out of any other psychological disease, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate. This is becoming a much bigger problem than anyone might have anticipated, due to the constant references from the media about how being thin is so important. It has also become harder to combat, because of the fast food industry. Despite what is common knowledge, eating disorders are curable and there are various methods of treatment available that's as simple as encouragement and as complex as psychotherapy.…
