Did Appeasement The Only Policy To Follow In The 1930s

In this essay I will explore whether appeasement was the only policy to follow in the 1930s and at the end I will conclude to if it was the best way or not. During the 1930s, Britain and France followed a policy of appeasement, they gave Hitler what he wanted in order to keep the peace.

A lot of people disagree with appeasement as it gave Hitler an advantage. When the war started it was Britain fighting against a very strong Germany that had started to rearm and had the raw materials, industry and people fighting from Austria and Czechoslovakia. Also appeasement was seen as morally wrong and cowardice, it allowed Hitler to break international law and give away parts of countries against their will. I think this a bad thing because Hitler or anyone should not be allowed to give away parts of countries without permission and a vote on if they want the part of the country to be given away. Also giving Hitler advantage is certainly not a good thing as it means he gained an army and trained the army in time to fight Britain.

Another reason why appeasement was not a good thing was because if Chamberlain had stood up to Hitler when he occupied the Rhineland then none of the war would have happened and Hitler would have been defeated, however Hitler
Appeasement gave Britain enough time to rearm and survive Hitler’s attacks when they came. This is definitely good as it meant that England wasn’t defeated and could still fight Germany and win. Also many British, including Chamberlain agreed with Hitler that Versailles was unfair on Germany. Hitler was only getting back what rightfully belonged to Germany. This sounds good because it means Germany get back what is theirs and they remain happy and England isn't made to feel bad because Germany was now being treated
