Diagnostic Writing Prompt
1. How comfortable are you with academic writing? I am quite comfortable with academic writing. I displayed exceptional skill in comprehensive writing when I was in high school, and I feel confident that, despite the time that has passed, my skills are still proficient. I have always taken pride in my spelling, and I have an obsessive compulsion toward proper grammar when writing in a professional manner.
2. What problems do you anticipate the need to address? Although I have my confidence, I do feel that my writings skills are a bit rusty and not on a par with what they once were. Formatting is a particular subject with which I will need to be reacquainted, as my last

What would you like to get out of this class (i.e., personal goals)? There are several things I would like to achieve from this class. First, I would definitely like to improve my knowledge of proper grammar. I truly believe that, when trying to display an air of professionalism, the improper use of grammar can be a sign of mediocrity in a person’s character. Proper grammar use can aid a person to sound intellectual and competent. Secondly, I would like to extend my vocabulary. I have found myself sounding redundant too many times. I hope that knowing a vaster range of words will help. Lastly, and perhaps the most important, I would like to learn how to properly format a variety of essay styles. I feel undereducated in this area and would like to know more.
4. How motivated are you to change and improve your writing? I am very motivated. I know that having the knowledge of proper writing can enable me to rise above any competition in presentation, as well as save time in editing. Improving one’s writing skills is always beneficial, and I know there is always room to improve. I want to be taken seriously in the real world, so I figure that improving my writing can aid in achieving that

After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write. With analyzing I realized that my writing process have a very sequential pattern. I also have noticed that many acts of critical planning and editing are carried out through many of my writings and it has had a negative effect on the majority of my writing masterpieces. Subsequent to carefully critiquing my writing I have realized that all individuals have a different way they write.…

Personally, I’ve always felt I was a decent writer in all aspects regarding research and personal narratives. Considering those are subjects that interest me and that I love to read about. I struggle the most when it comes to making my writing hold a deeper or hidden message when the topics I am told to write about don’t interest me. Having to do rhetorical analysis with old literature and having to explain the main idea was my number one struggle in AP language and composition senior year. But other than that I felt, throughout high school, I enjoyed writing and taking a majority of the writing classes my school had to offer, not only because it was required but because it was something that teachers and myself felt I did acceptable work.…

The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

The art of writing is a unique skill that requires the writer to have great flexibility and be open to improvement. Some may consider themselves a “perfect writer”, when in reality, no one is, and will ever be. Writing is a process that requires one to continuously build on skills learned in previous situations, applying new techniques and strategies to future writing projects. As a writer, there are things that I do well, but there are also things I could improve on to make my writing better. I’m pretty good at getting my point across, and getting people to understand what I’m trying to say. Another thing I’m good at is just writing the paper. Once I get started on a paper it is very easy for me to just keep writing until I’m done with it. However, when doing this I tend to not use the best grammar and be too wordy with my writing. I can definitely fix these issues, and continue to build on the things that I do well.…
