Diabetes Self Management

Diabetes is the most common diagnosis in low-income families in the United States. For most people diagnosed with type II diabetes, diabetes self-management (DSM) is the most efficient means for prolonging their lives (Fritz, H. A. (2017). According to Fritz, H. A. (2017), a successful integration of DSM in the US standards consists of healthy eating, active lifestyle, medication adherence appropriately as prescribed, continuous self-monitoring, and appropriate survival and coping mechanisms for the stressful effects of the disease. However, DSM requires having diverse knowledge and skill set which can be challenging to properly integrate into one’s life.

This research project will evaluate patient’s perspectives of their challenges and successes of their diabetes self-efficacy and management (DSM), by administering a diabetic self-efficacy and management tool/questionnaire based on the American Diabetes Association guidelines (American Diabetes Association 2017), such as the one used by Schmitt, A., Reimer, A., Hermanns, N., Huber, J., Ehrmann, D., Schall, S., & Kulzer, B (2016).
Based on the results from the above questionnaire, a diabetic self-efficacy and management educational program (DSMEP) that targets the challenges faced by the patients will be designed and implemented. A comparison analysis of the DSM questionnaire and a post two weeks DSM questionnaire will then be administered to evaluate patient’s diabetes self-efficacy and management abilities status post the administration of the diabetic self-efficacy and management educational
