Diversity Worksheet

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

The Merriam Webster onine dictionary defines diversity as:

* the condition of having or being composed of differing elements : variety, especially: the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization

Diversity is valued, in my opinion, because with diversity comes a variety of perspectives. Being raised in different environments, with difference cultures, and with different heritages creates a variation in the way things are done. In several environments such as colleges, workplaces, and even the communities in which we live those different perscpectives make up the environment as a whole.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

According to dictionary.com the sociology definition of ethnocentrism is “the belief in the inferent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture”. This belief can be quite detrimental to a society because a person who is ethnocentric assumes that their culture or ethnic group is the best and as a result believes that everyone else is inferior or not as important as they are. This creates conflict between individuals from different cultures and can prevent harmony in a community that is diverse.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Dictionary.com had defined emigration and immigration as the following:

Emigrate- to leave ones country to migrate to another (usually for career opportunities, education or to join family in another land or country)
Immigrate- to come to a foreign country as a permanent resident

Meriam Webster online dictionary added to the immigrate definition that individuals not only enter but usually become

    1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? When I looked up the definition of diversity on Dictionary.com it says 1. The state or quality of being different or varied (“Dictionary.com”, 2013). I think it is valued because it brings people from different backgrounds and cultures together and teaches us about our differences as well as our similarities. It gives us the opportunity to experience other cultures and ethnic group’s traditions, and beliefs. I also think that it can help us learn from each other’s differences and maybe gain some new perspective.…

    1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? In the Queensborough Community College Website, it says “The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies”. Diversity is valued because everyone is different, not one person is the same, and they are unique. We tend to reject what is different. Our diversities can lead to growth as a society or it can lead to violence and hatred. We should value our diversity in order to come together as a whole within the society and world.…
