Assignment: Ch.3. Descriptive Writing—“The Body Farm”
p.139, #1. Write an essay in which you describe something that most people would find repulsive or frightening.
Skydiving
It was an ordinary day in June when a few friends and I decided that we wanted to do something that we thought was exhilarating, so we went skydiving. What is skydiving you might ask yourself? Skydiving is exactly what it sounds like, the act of jumping or falling out of an aircraft and parachuting to the earth. Some people might call you crazy or even think that it is repulsive or frightening, but those adventurous enough to participate will never forget what it is like and will want to do it over and over again. To us, skydiving is a vacation. The morning that we decided to go skydiving was a time that I will never forget. I awoke that Saturday and began to think about what I was going to do; after an idea came to me I called my friend Raquel and Julie. When they picked up the phone and heard of what I was asking of them they both were apprehensive and nervous, but after talking to them for a while they both decided that we would go. Around 12:30 I picked them up and we went to get something to eat at McDonalds, before heading out to Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon. I have to admit that upon arriving at Skydive Spaceland my friends and I began to wonder what had gotten into us. Upon our arrival we first went into the plane hanger and then to a place they call “Manifest”, which is where you began to sign your life away. Filling out the papers took my friends and I approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete, and this paper work was basically legal documents that say if you are injured or hurt in anyway shape or form in the dive that the are not liable for anything. When we were through signing the papers and paying the fees, we were then ready to take the class required for the dive. In order to skydive you must take a 45

Trepidation filled my head. Despite the negative 10 degree weather, sweat pooled in my gloves and rolled down my face. Thoughts raced through my mind; a wrong execution could mean death. 11 years of ski lessons had cultivated to this one moment. My life was on the line, yet a wave of excitement shook me. I took a look down at the jump that had come to dominate Joe’s backyard, replacing his childhood swing set. The jump was sizable, but not gargantuan. From previous hits I noticed its “poppy” lip - skier talk for a jump that sends you up rather than out - which is ideal for the trick I was about to attempt: a backflip.…

Ever have someone tell you that you are doing something and they ended up telling you that you are crazy or nuts, well I have. Every February for the last four years I have done the Polar Plunge and most people think that I am nuts for doing it. However, if one is not fully prepared for a Polar Plunge, it can really ruin the whole experience. It can be ruined by not having the proper items packed, also by not having a costume, and not mentally preparing for what you are about to do. By doing these few things I can be very well prepared for the jump. Doing a Polar Plunge is no small feat and do not get me wrong because this is one of the biggest highs I get.…

“Why Jump out of a perfectly good airplane,” is the typical response that is said whenever someone is talking about their skydiving adventures. Everyone experiences danger in their lives at one time or another. There are so many different reasons why people encounter danger and why some would choose it over safety. Junger points out in his essay "Colter's Way," individuals can experience adventure in forms of employment, survival, or recreation.…

In his talk "I Leaped from the Stratosphere," Alan Eustace describes his experience of flying the stratosphere and falling back down to Earth. When his project to accomplish this first began, his question was if someone could linger in and explore the stratosphere. Usually, when the stratosphere was visited, it was by astronauts flying through it in a rocker. To accomplish his goal, Eustace contacted the Paragon Space Development program and asked if it was possible to have a human linger in the stratosphere. He was told that it was possible and to come present his idea to them the next day. The suit was designed like a scuba diving suit, with everything that could be needed equipped, like parachutes, protection from the cold, and oxygen.…

I am a currently trained in Military Free-Fall, so it would be safe to say that I have knowledge by observation and participation. I have enjoyed watching skydiving competitions on television and in the military. As a kid I can remember wanting to do that when I grew up. When I joined the Special Forces in 1989 I knew my chances were greatly increasing for me to participate in skydiving operations, but it wasn't until 1995 when that final moment would arrive. I enjoy the excitement of participation in a skydiving operation that consists in small numbers of personnel to a mass group.…

of being an experienced diver or even a paratrooper. After a few years and a lot of research into the situation they came to the conclusion that that wasn't true. Dan was reported wearing a trench coat and loafers, he was simply dressed for air travel not skydiving. The weather is also a factor to take in,it was raining with around a 200mh wind.Even if he did survive the jump he more than likely froze to death when he landed in the wilderness in the middle of winter.…

So as we’re being shoveled out of the plane, there’s AAG blasts going off all around us. Then came my turn where I never thought you could get a jumping lesson in 30 seconds. Well it was enough for me. Out I went. Exciting, exhilarating, and scary as hell, were the first three things that came to mind. Now I’m no meteorologist but there are these invisible paths the air flows called vectors and if you don’t know what you’re doing you can be rerouted from you initial path. The third and final week is known as jump week, that’s when we would actually exit an airplane. The day had finally came I had my parachute on my back which was so cumbersome and heavy I still remember how my back ached from the weight. The airplane ride up made me so sick I almost threw up, it didn’t help that we were packed in like sardines. By the time the door opened and the jump master told us to stand up and hook up all the fear had left me I simply wanted out of that airplane and to take that parachute off. When he yelled go we all began to exit all the fears I had were gone I was so ready to be done with training. My exit was great and I had a good landing, I completed four more jumps and successfully graduated airborne…

I loved the first leg beyond my current vocabulary, the dangling rope represents 500 ft of consecutive plummeting. The feeling rewarded to the adventurer when staring straight down at the ground, which is 600 ft away, while hanging on a single rope is exhilarating! I have to admit that at the time, I felt a little timid and took my time, but if I could do it again I would plunge at least twice as fast. The whole group reached the bottom again by 7 pm. Exhaustion overcame me, and as soon as we got back to camp, I crashed on the back bench again and continued to sleep the whole way home.…

First, we went to the office to sign all the waivers, which made me really nervous for my life. Since we had a long wait, we sat down with the other people who were in our group. I met an elderly man and his wife; they were very polite and friendly. It was their first time parasailing also. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was time for us to board the boat. We had to walk across the street and down a long walkway to get to the dock. As we were boarding the boat I almost slipped and fell into the water.…
